Abstract

India faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and inadequate waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal. Current systems in India cannot cope up with the volumes of waste generated by an increasing urban population and this impacts on the environment and public health. The challenges and barriers are significant but so are the opportunities. India currently has no official systems for collecting and recycling plastic waste; nor are there overarching initiatives by private or public sector. Waste is collected and recycled very efficiently: waste pickers scour municipal dumps and later sell plastic items to small local plastics processors or recyclers. It is estimated that millions of tonnes of plastic waste is reclaimed this way every year. Plastic recycling in India is highly efficient but potentially hazardous. How big is plastics industry in India? India wants to double consumption of Plastics in next five years, what about its plastic waste? Main challenges is complexity and lack of transparency of the informal recycling system.
