The City of Cape Town’s Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP, 2006) for 2012 – 2013 financial year aims at achieving a 20% reduction in waste generated and 10% reduction in waste to landfill. As part of achieving these waste reduction aims such as through waste generation preventive measures, waste recycling and alternative waste disposal options, thermal waste conversion can play an integral role in achieving these targets. A recently concluded Municipal Systems Act section 78(3) process assessment on waste management system by the Solid Waste Department has also explicitly targeted waste to energy as an option for alternative waste disposal technology, especially for dry dirty or non-recyclable and organic waste material. In this paper an overview of solid waste management practices will be discussed as well as the characteristics of municipal solid wastes from the city. An analysis of the RDF obtained from the MSW and fish wastes will be discussed as well as briquettes from corn stovers. Another energy material that can be obtained from MSW is hydrogen which can be used in PEM fuel cells. Sewage treatment to obtain biogas and bio-solids will also be discussed. The quality of municipal solid wastes (MSW) needs an improved analysis to enhance the choice for energy exploitation and environmental assessment of fly and bottom ashes associated with the thermochemical conversion. The paper will conclude by analysing the production of electricity from one of the city’s landfill sites.

Title: Economic impacts of producing renewable aviation fuel from cover crops: A case study using pennycress as the feedstock

Burton C English has been evaluating renewable energy issues since 1978. His areas of concentration include market evaluation, supply chain feasibility and

economic and environmental impacts of the supply chain. These are critical components to evaluating sustainability of the catalytic systems tailored for the

structural features of biomass and its hydrocarbons. Our program evaluates supply chain costs and compares these costs to breakeven analysis of products. In addition, since 2005 we have evaluated the market size for chemical building blocks. Feasibility analysis and tradeoffs analysis between significant environmental and economic variables has been his particular interest. In addition, incorporation of the effects of risk parameters on the supply chain, economic impacts to the communities and techno-economic evaluations of the conversion system have been areas of interest.

In 2015, prior to the climate talks in Paris, the Obama administration wanted to take steps to limit the greenhouse gas emissions from airplanes, after EPA had declared that the aviation emissions contribute to global warming and endanger

human health. EPA deferred any ruling until seeing the report of the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The use of renewable jet fuel has the potential to decrease fuel-price uncertainties, thereby decreasing fuel-hedging costs and decreasing profit volatility. The United States Government is actively supporting the development of renewable jet fuels.

As of 2015, the standard setting organization, ASTM International, has approved five renewable jet fuels for use in aviation. This analysis examines the potential for pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) to support a renewable jet fuel industry in the United States. Rajesh Karki (S’98–M’00–SM’04) received his BE degree from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India and an MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Saskatchewan. He was a Lecturer for Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Abstract:

Fossil fuel is presently the major source for electricity production and is believed to be a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Enormous effort has therefore been put on the development and application of green energy sources. Wind is a promising alternative, which has the potential to be a major power source in future power systems. Huge investments are being made in this sector, which has led to considerable advancement in wind power technology. It is expected that wind power installations will grow substantially to produce clean energy in electric power systems. Wind penetration, which is defined as the ratio of the installed wind capacity to the total installed capacity

of a power system is currently about 5% in the Saskatchewan province of Canada. It is expected to increase to over 20% by the next decade. This trend is seen in many jurisdictions around the world. The characteristics of wind power generation is significantly different from that of other conventional generating plants which dictates a need for wind models and techniques appropriately responsive to these characteristics. An increasing number of wind farms located at different sites with varying geographical terrains are being connected to power systems as the wind power penetration continues to grow. The diversity in the wind speed at the various sites can have significant influence on the variability of the overall system generation. This in turn affects system performance and reliability. The wind generation models required for system reliability assessment should therefore appropriately represent the diversity in wind generation profiles. This becomes more important especially at high penetration levels expected in the near future. Time-synchronized data from all the wind farms are generally required to incorporate this correlation in the analysis and hence to accurately model the combined wind generation characteristics. This paper uses an analytical technique to create wind generation models of diverse wind farms and quantifies the reliability benefit to the power system in terms of wind capacity credit and the increase in peak load carrying capability of a wind-integrated power system.

Eshagh Yazdanshenas, PhD, PE, LEED AP, CEM is Head of Energy Group at the Global Engineering Solutions. He obtained his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark within the Marie Curie Training Network, Advanced Solar Heating and Cooling for Buildings SOLNET (Solar Thermal Network) project in 2010. SOLNET was the first international PhD education program on Solar Thermal Engineering with partners from nine universities and seven European countries supported by the European Commission. He is an expert in renewable energy, building energy modeling and performance modeling applications such as CFD and daylighting modeling. He is proficient in many modeling and simulation programs and related applications, such as EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder, Google SketchUp, Ecotect, Radiance, Star CCM+ and FLUENT, TRNSYS, Trane Trace among others. As a member of Maryland, MD IBPSA chapter, he helps to organize meetings and speakers. Abstract:

This talk presents some recommendations for the current challenges, development and implementation of renewable energy technologies in the US. Europe has been for several years forefront of renewable energy technology in the world. Europe has presented great innovations in applying sustainable development and renewable energy practices into Europeans daily

life. With the increase in the renewable market in China and the rest of the world, it is essential for US companies to be more involved in the state of the art renewable energy technology in US and around the globe. The challenges for US would be pulling out from Paris agreement, state level not federal level law, inefficient buildings, plants and automobiles, use of fossil fuels, poor renewable energy infrastructure and final renewable energy cost for American family. The opportunities and hope would be DOE’s 20% Wind energy production by 2030 report, renewable energy job creation, 35 states with 70% of the total US net power with the overall target averages 20% of electricity from renewables by 2020 and diversifying risk of energy route by investing in many different states. Last but not least, the author will focus on renewable energy education based on his practical study of solar thermal in Europe and working in US afterwards and will compare the challenges, opportunities and practices of renewable energy and energy efficiency in two sides of Atlantic Ocean and will propose joint European and American renewable energy schools and connection with the European universities counterpart for the joint renewable energy program.

Benjamin Welle is the Director of Energy Lab at Perkins+Will. His role is to develop innovative design methods for the next generation of architects working towards the goal of zero emission buildings. His work focuses on the integration of web-based parametric design tools with energy, daylighting and thermal comfort simulation tools for use in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) environments using parallel and distributed computing. He has received his BS in Energy Engineering and MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering-Atmosphere/Energy from Stanford University, MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering-Design Construction Integration from Stanford’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE). He is a registered professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California.

Abstract:

The building industry has a love-hate relationship with technology and has been slow to adopt it. This trend is particularly applicable to the use of computer-based analysis in support of high-performance building design with the ultimate goal of zero emission buildings. This lecture will deconstruct the current state of how industry uses technology within this domain, the opportunities that exist for the near future and the challenges in effectively implementing these opportunities. Current R&D efforts at Perkins+Will for web-based energy and daylighting simulation, optimization and visualization using cloud computing environments will be highlighted as one possible strategy for rapid, scalable, accurate and meaningful integration of technology into the architectural design process. A vision of how this strategy’s success will impact and support the green energy industry as a whole and vice versa, will be presented to and interactively evaluated with the audience.

Providing travel-related energy and environmental information to transport users is becoming increasingly relevant. However, the impact of providing such information on users’ travel behavior is yet to be determined. This research examines the perceptions and preferences of the fuel consumption costs, GHG social costs and health-related air pollution costs and the influence such information have on travel behavior. Examining the case of transport users of Montreal, Canada with a pilot survey, we found that the respondents are generally unaware of the energy and environmental footprints of theirntravel. Approximately, 70% of the respondents are not able to estimate GHG social costs and health-related air pollution costs across different modes. The respondents who could provide their perceived costs generally overestimate these costs and interestingly perceive higher environmental costs for public transport (metro) compared to cars. They also prefer to receive such information in monetary units rather than in their own units (e.g., grams of emissions) and they are more comfortable in receiving the information through mobile applications over other tools/means (GPS devices, radio and so on). The research also finds that energy and environmental information can influence respondents’ travel decisions especially their route choices. Finally, the respondents are willing to pay an average of $6/month in exchange for obtaining the information.

Abstract:

The growing demand for high efficient energy utilization of vehicles replaces hydraulic systems with electro-hydraulic actuators. The benefits of the electro-hydraulic system are energy recovery/storage, variable speed, power on demand and reduced emission. In era of electric vehicle, the electronic components (motor, power electronics and battery) for the electro-hydraulic system requires effective, reliable and long-life time technologies. The authors present a recent research on the cooling technology applied for the development of an effective brushless direct current (BLDC) motor which electronically performs rectification without brushes. In general, BLDC motor is well-known to low noise, high durability and reliability. Nonetheless, unavoidable temperature increase during operation reduces the efficiency of the motor due to increased losses. The critical loss is resolved into iron and copper losses in accordance with the mechanisms. In this regard, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the losses induced by temperature increase. The numerical model is validated by conducting experimentation which presents excellent agreement with the simulation results. During the operation of the motor for 20 minutes, the temperatures increase up to 62.3°C and 32.2°C for stator and magnet respectively. The authors also demonstrate air cooling structure to reduce the temperatures resulting in reduced losses, increased motor efficiency and durability.

Stephen W Brooks is the Chief of the Assets and Logistics Management Division (ALM) of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) Glynco campus. As Chief of ALM, he is responsible for all the personal property located at four FLETC sites. This includes 32,691 assets valued at $96,190,410.39 dollars located in Charleston South Carolina, Cheltenham, Maryland and Artesia, New Mexico. He oversees the business lines of inventory management, fleet management, mail management, property disposal and the recycling program. In 2015, he was named the 2015 sustainability hero for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for his innovations in recycling solid waste generated by law enforcement firearms training. He has published in recycling and has been a Noted Speaker at the 2015 Southeastern Recycling Conference in San Destin, Florida and the 2015 Georgia Recycling Coalition Conference on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Abstract:

The integrated management of media based (both water and air) pollutants is the vital at current as the management and legalization of individual pollutant is very difficult. Integration of various environmental aspects associated with activities of production processes is one of the challenges in industrial sectors. It is of vital concern to find the scientific way of integration of media based pollutants for today. Based on amount and kind of media based pollutants, Integrated Environmental Performance Score (IEPS) is calculated applying Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and other Environmental Impacts (TRACI). The potential impacts of individual pollutants have been modeled for water-based pollutants viz., Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Phosphorous (TP) and Total Nitrogen (TN) and air pollutants viz.,

Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Oxides of Sulphur (SOx) and Particles Matter (PM10). A kilogram of individual pollutants is taken in modeling to compute the individual impact categories of unit pollutants. The EPS penalty of TN is obtained as highest score of 189.70 i.e. 90.82% shares among six pollutants. The total penalty score for TP, PM10, TN, NOx and SOx, is derived as 13.53 (6.48%), 2.59 (1.24%), 1.30 (0.62%), 1.30 (0.62%) and 0.44 (0.21%), respectively. Hence, it is necessary to integrate effects of pollutants as per the scientific and justified impact caused by individual pollutants derived from the industrial facilities. Therefore, this study recommends for the compliance of EPS penalty of the pollutants based on a result of TRACI. This helps to enforce a scientific and justified polluters’ pay principle.

sustainability team and manages long term international projects on environmental management systems for local governments, climate resilience, water, sanitation and solid waste management in South Asian countries.

Abstract:

With increasing population, economic development and a growing consumerism, South Asian cities are facing a significant change in waste generation and its characteristics. Managing waste has always been the responsibility of local authorities (LAs), but the age-old practice of dumping waste is no longer sustainable. It is an inefficient way to use limited land resources causes environmental pollution of soil and ground-water, social impacts through health issues of nearby communities and is an overall unsustainable practice leading to loss of valuable material resources. Obviously, LAs need to look for sustainable options of reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Integrating the existing system of informal waste-pickers in South Asia, who dominate recycling even before the waste enters the formal management system can lead to significant environmental (material recovery), social (health) and economic (livelihood options) benefits. ICLEI South Asia conducted a project in 7 South Asian LAs encouraging them to promote waste segregation and recycling particularly through informal sector, to move towards a zero-waste community. Successful pilot projects in the cities, demonstrated how recycling helped to reduce waste going to landfills, produced resource materials including compost and generated livelihood for waste-pickers in the city. Continuous engagement with local communities and waste pickers ensured the continuity of the pilots even beyond the life of the project. Critical to successful recycling is simultaneous segregation of waste at source which relies heavily on the awareness levels of community as well as well-established linkages with recycling units which will take up the segregated recyclables. Moving towards zero waste in cities needs collaboration with state and national government agencies so as to incorporate all types of waste, since LAs are only responsible for municipal waste which technically excludes medical waste and hazardous waste but which are major components of the waste coming out of cities.

In her MPhil research study, she has found that a low cost simplified hydroponic system with paddy husk in the media as effective way of Si nutrition to enhance anthracnose disease resistance in capsicum.

Abstract:

Statement of the Problem: Paddy husk (PH) is an agricultural waste which has not been utilized properly worldwide. Mostly it is left unused as waste or simply burned in the field creating significant environmental problems. It is expected to have about 700,000 tons of paddy husk production in Sri Lanka in year 2020. PH is an organic nutrient source particularly rich in silicon. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of incorporation of PH in the growing substrate to improve plant growth, yield and disease tolerance. A simplified hydroponics system (SHS) with PH and sand (3:2 v:v) media was tested on capsicum plants. In addition, the effect of amendment of soil media with different ratios of PH was investigated on Capsicum annuum L. The effect of amendment of potting media of rubber nursery plants with 20% of PH charcoal or PH ash was also studied. Findings: More than 50% of soluble Si was detected in the nutrient solution of SHS as measured by colorimetric method. SHS was effective for increasing fruit length, fruit weight, shoot length, root length with 83% of reduction of anthracnose disease. In the pot experiment, it was revealed that incorporation of 60% of PH in to soil would be effective for reducing anthracnose disease of capsicum. Significant improvement of plant diameter was reported in rubber nursery plants when potting media was amended with either PH charcoal or PH ash. Conclusion & Significance: In case of anthracnose disease of capsicum use of PH would be an environmental friendly control measure. The findings open path for future investigations on the effect of different forms of PH for enhancing performance of different plants. Further investigations should be conducted to find the vital nutritional potentials of PH and prevent it disposing as waste

Abstract:

Climate change is affecting birds worldwide. Such impacts have always been prevailing due to rising temperature or unpredictable rainfall that might be too abundant or little and which in turn bring about dire consequences upon the lives of the endemic bird known as Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi). In this paper we propose a framework analysis describing the possible patterns of change in the distribution of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) population based on climate parameters such as temperature, rainfall and humidity in hope to better have an improved quantitative methodology meant to identify and describe these patterns. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method recoursing to focus upon sites observation and a deep interviews to be carried out while using SPSS 16 in order to know the variables correlation in hope to determine the plausible significance between them that allow us to analyse the effects of environmental variables on bird species in this study. We tested the proposed methodology using data from the West Bali National Park and the existing data of climate variables over the last decade where climate variables are considered to be significant factors influencing the lives of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi). This study discovers that increases in temperature and precipitation each year have adversely affected the number of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) population indicating that the bird’s survival capacity depends largely much on temperature. Besides, it has been perceived that Bali Myna is very reproductive in rainy season but its fluctuations whether high or low impacts them as well. The distribution mapping show a decline of population in 2006 while an increase was perceived during the last five year period of 2011-2015. Besides, over the same period, a slight increase of 0.4 °C in mean temperature was noticed precisely in Cekik our research site where Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) are.

Abstract:

From the environmental point of view there is a great interest in a recycling of packaging foils. Most of them are based on glycol modified poly (terepthalate ethylene)-PETG- printed with colorful inks. Therefore, there is necessary to rinse out inks from the foils first to make them processable. In the first step, the waste foils coming from different producers were characterized in terms of their structure and composition. It was found that they are similar to each other and that is possible to wash away all of the colorful inks in one shot with the appropriately selected medium. The comparison of properties of the foils before and after washing showed that there is no effect of the solvent used. In the next step the transparent foils after washing were dried and processed directly by the twin screw extruder machine in laboratory scale. Based on the results from thermal analysis (TGA, DSC) and rheological behavior (MFI index, shear modulus, complex viscosity) the processing conditions have been optimized. Finally, the effect of different processing temperature and number of cycles on properties of regrind material was investigated. The aim of the study was to analyze the possibility to use regrind PETG foil as a raw material. After that, he joined the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) until he moved to Seikei University. In the meantime, he joined Institute for Environmental Chemistry at the National Research Council, Canada as a Guest Researcher and the Department of Chemical System Engineering at University of Tokyo as a Guest Professor. His research field covers wide range of environmental issues including recycling, CO2 mitigation, water treatment and air pollution.

Abstract:

A new type of material PAdeCS®, derived from concrete sludge has been developed and its removal performances for heavy metals and toxic anions such as arsenate, boron were examined. Concrete sludge is waste of fresh concrete, which is rich in calcium and strong alkaline. Concrete sludge is generated when unused concrete is returned from construction sites or excess concrete in the concrete-using industries. In Japan, the annual emission rate of concrete sludge is as large as several millions metric tons and it requires an acid treatment to neutralize the alkaline components before disposal. We have developed a method for manipulating concrete sludge to prepare a solid material through partial removal of calcium contents to avoid hardening of concrete. After solid-liquid separation, the solid residue was obtained, which is still rich in calcium and alkaline. PAdeCS®, so prepared have versatile usage including heavy metal removal and toxic anion removal from waste water.

In addition, calcium and alkaline in PAdeCS® would form hydroxyapatite (HAP) when mixed with dissolved phosphorus ions. Thus, PAdeCS® can be used for phosphorous recovery process from sewage stream. We first tested the removal performance of boron and fluorine in water. Since PAdeCS® is derived from hydrated cement, it would contain a certain amount of ettringite, a crystalline material with the chemical formula, Ca6Al2 (SO4)3(OH)12•26H2O of which sulfate ions have anion exchange capacity with ambient anions. The experimental results showed that boron as well as fluorine in water can be removed efficiently. In addition, removal of heavy metals and arsenate in water was examined and showed excellent removal performances. Thus PAdeCS® is a versatile solid material for environmental-related applications.

Abstract:

We measured the emissions of VOCs from polymeric materials such as PVC, PP and PE under various environmental conditions. We prepared a passive type flux sampler made of a glass petri dish of which the inner diameter is 22 mm and the height is 5 mm. A fixed amount of Tenax GR powder is placed on the inner bottom of the sampler as an adsorbent for capturing VOCs. A sheet of a target polymeric material was placed on the sampler for a given period under constant temperature condition. The VOCs emitted from the polymeric sheet diffused through the sampler space and were captured onto the adsorbent. The captured VOCs were then analyzed by the ATD-GC/MS technique to determine the composition and the emission rates. The temperature was change in the range of 25°C (room temperature) to 75°C and the sampling period was set 24 hrs. To examined the time-course of the VOC emission behaviors, the test polymeric materials were left under the same conditions up to 4 weeks and the emission measurements were carried out every 1 week. The total VOC emission (TVOC emission, reduced to toluene) of soft PVCs were much higher than those from other polymers such as PE, PET and we focused on the emission from soft PVCs with different properties. The major VOCs emitted from soft PVC were phenol, 2-ethylhexanol, DEHP and aliphatic hydrocarbons. DEHP is intentionally added to PVC as a plasticizer and 2-ethylhexanol was supposed to be a product of dissociation of DEHP. The emission rate of each component showed a time change as well as temperature dependency. The emission of phenol decreased with time and that of DEHP decreased at first 3 weeks but increased after 4 weeks. The temperature dependence of the emission rates can be expressed by the Arrhenius type equation and the apparent activation energy was determined. These results could be useful for the evaluation of life-cycle risks caused by the use, recycle and reuse of polymeric materials used in commercial products.

Abstract:

Combustion of coal and municipal solid waste (MSW) causes air pollution and produces solid residues which contain high levels of toxic elements. The toxic characteristics of residues generated from combustion of MSW in waste-to-energy plants are strictly controlled by Federal and State Waste Management Regulations. According to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), residue generated from combustion of MSW is considered hazardous and must be tested according to EPA Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) Method 1311 and suitably treated for its safe disposal to landfills. Experiments with various treatment chemicals as primary independent variable had earlier been conducted by several agencies and facilities. The author has successfully developed two new cost-effective solutions for stabilizing heavy metals in MSW residues to cover the gap between the leachability concentrations of toxic elements observed in residues and the leachability toxicity limits as per EPA's regulatory threshold. These methods include treating MSW residue fly ash (FA) with 2% dolomitic lime by weight or by injecting aqueous (39% concentration) sodium sulfide at a controlled rate. The extensive full scale experimental study was carried out at 240 t/day capacity Hampton/NASA waste-to-energy mass burn MSW incinerator (MSWI). This process has showed savings to the extent of $150,000 per year by treating the plant's combustion residues with aqueous sodium sulfide over the use of dolomitic lime for ash treatment. The treatment method invented has also shown better control of the leachability of toxic heavy metals than previously used chemical treatment methods. Comparative study showing the level of leachability of toxic heavy metals with different treatment methods has also been studied and the best management practices for use and disposal of such wastes have been discussed.

Abstract:

Water quality assessment of inorganic pollutants in some rivers and streams of four different locations (Sokori, Gbangba,Kobiti and Oke-Ijemo) within Abeokuta metropolis was investigated to determine the extent of pollution in these settlements for environmental quality and sustainability. The pH, acidity, alkalinity and metals like chromium, iron, lead and zinc were analyzed using standard laboratory methods. The results showed that the pH of most of the water samples were slightly alkaline with the exception of Oke-Ijemo stream which was slightly acidic but the values obtained fell within the WHOstandards. Sulphate and phosphates were not detected at all in the rivers Sokori and Gbangba as well as Oke-Ijemo stream but were detected in Kobiti stream which fell below the permissible limits. Iron and zinc were present in all the locations investigated with three out of the four locations having iron concentration above the permissible level and zinc concentrations were below the WHO standards. In conclusion, there was no pollution of the water bodies therein with the exception of iron and hence water sources investigated could be generally considered fit for industrial, domestic and aqua-cultural purposes

but for human consumption adequate treatment with appropriate chemicals should be carried out before to prevent outbreak of water borne diseases among the living populace in these areas. However, people residing in these communities should be advised on indiscriminate dumping of any refuse and domestic wastes into the water bodies so as to prevent environmental

pollution and health related hazards.

A wide range of environmental factors including heavy metals stress stimulates oxidative stress. So, antioxidant resistance mechanisms may provide a strategy to enhance metal tolerance by minimizing the toxic effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the present investigation, the effects of heavy metals producing antioxidative defense systems i.e. Superoxide dismutase, Peroxidase and Catalase were studied in the potato plants grown in soil polluted with heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Pb). The results showed that the tannery effluent was highly toxic with high values of all pollution parameters (pH, TDS, NaCl %, ECe, bicarbonates, chlorides). Amount of heavy metals was also high in the effluent and increased with increasing the concentration of effluent. Amount of chromium was the maximum as compared to other heavy metals. Four concentrations of tannery effluent (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) were prepared with normal garden soil along with the two treatments of ascorbic acid i.e., 0 and 0.5mM. The maximum biomass was observed in the control and it was decreased with the increasing effluent concentration. The exposure of plants to the highest concentration (8%) reduces the height of shoot. Among the treatments, 0.5mM was observed to show the best tolerance and growth properties with respect to metals. The antioxidant enzyme activities wereincreased by metals stress. The present investigation revealed that the ascorbic acid treatment by foliar spray on the growing plants of potato could enhance the efficiency of antioxidants that significantly reduce the toxic effect of metals from tannery effluent amended soil. The antioxidative activity seems to be of primary importance for adaptive response of potato plants against ROS produced under environmental stress.

Abstract:

Metals are used extensively in production and have wide applications. Extraction and processing of mineral resources consume a huge amount of energy and steel being the most widely used metal is responsible for the single largest share of the energy consumption all over the world. In manufacturing, machining is a metal subtractive process and produces a large quantity of chips/swarf. Efficient recycling of machining waste can save a lot of energy as well as its effective disposal. This necessitates developing an efficient way to take the chips and recombine them into a block or useful shape for further applications. The processing method should not involve remelting in furnace as this has low efficiency and creates problems related to ambient pollution. Laser direct metal deposition (LDMD) is an additive manufacturing technique which uses material efficiently. In LDMD, injected metal powder is laser melted and fused to the substrate and subsequent layers. Quick solidification is achieved by the local heating and by traversing the substrate. However, the high cost of raw metal powder is one of the barriers to use of this technique on a wide scale. A possible solution to the problems of machining waste recycling and high cost of LDMD powder is to consider machining swarf as an alternative build material for LDMD. This paper illustrates the viability of laser metal deposition of carbon steel machining swarf with nonstandard particle size and shape. Particles of unprecedented size and shape have been deposited and the feasibility of using this kind of build material has been established following analysis of different outcome parameters including clad geometry, microstructure and other physical properties. The results suggest that this recycling technique could with further development reduce demand for raw material and the energy required to extract and refine it.

Abstract:

The project "Demonstration of an energy-efficient and socially fair neighborhood development based on electrical-thermal interconnection systems" is a project initiated by the city of Zwickau in cooperation with scientific and economic partners. The main goal is to develop technologies and methods for the local energy transition, especially the local heat transition and to demonstrate this as a real laboratory in a suitable district in Zwickau. The conception and implementation of electrical-thermal interconnection systems is the basis for an energetic development in a district for the realization of a zero-emission-city. This requires highly efficient storage technologies and the combination of electrical and thermal overall concepts. This makes it possible to increase the share of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and in particular solar and geothermal energy in residential districts. Due to the demographic structure found in Zwickau, the city is already closer to the future - whether it is the population structure or the comparatively high technical start level due to the numerous projects carried out in this environment. Within the framework of this project, municipal projects such as climate protection concepts as well as scientific projects of the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and their partners can contribute to an energy-efficient and social development. Social welfare plays a special role in priority regions such as Zwickau. In this inter- and transdisciplinary project, it is indispensable to pursue a user-oriented and centered technology development. The offshore wind farm project in South Korea progressed and is targeted to reach more than 2,000 MW for developing a large-scale complex. The project could have influences such as physical, chemical, geological and biological effect on marine environment. The various impact factors such as noise, vibration and electromagnetic-fields are known to be major influencing factors on fisheries resources and marine organisms. Since the relationship between influential factors – the environmental impacts has not been clarified, difficulties in the acceptability of residents and the process of assessing the sea area utilization. There are no methods for biological impacts and risk assessment to noise, vibration and electromagnetic fields on the offshore wind farm project. While the developed countries assess various impacts on individual organisms, there is limit to interpreting results and determining risks. This study aims to propose bioassay methods and risk assessment methods suitable for Korean offshore wind farm projects. We will develop bioassay methods for field organism in the project area and prepare a risk assessment system to improve the acceptance of residents. Through the developed bioassay methods and risk assessment methods, we expect that this project will be carried out scientifically and systematically and become a project that residents empathize with.

Title: Using cryogenic separation of anode off gases for high temperature fuel cell applications

RafaÅ‚ Bernat is a PhD candidate of Warsaw University of Technology. He has his expertise in contamination of fuel cells with solid particles, carbon dioxide capture from conventional power plants, fuel cell testing, energy systems modeling and economic analyses of energy systems. He has developed with his group a novel model for mathematical description of fuel cells in large system models. Part of his research methodology is on molten carbonate fuel cell contamination was adopted by the Institute of Power Engineering and similar research is ongoing on other types of fuel cells. He also works as a Sales Engineer for a company selling emergency power systems and acts as an expert consulting another company on their business development. His goal is to consolidate many aspects including research, engineering, economics and sales to obtain broader view on the whole energy business.

Abstract:

Environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of fossil fuel deposits have driven significant research and development into alternative, clean energy sources. Fuel cells present very promising technologies mainly due to the fact that their electricity generation is not based on a heat engine which requires a working agent. Additional benefits could be obtained through combining fuel cells with gas turbines which could theoretically achieve very high efficiency over 70% though not proven to date. Thus, improving the performance of a hybrid solid oxide fuel cell gas turbine system is still under investigation. This can have done by estimating the geometric parameters of the turbomachinery components which shows a clear efficiency advantage for the whole operating range. This review work presents a comprehensive survey of the literature on cryogenic separation of anode off gas for fuel cells. First, the current status of anode off gas separation is assessed. Second, possible techniques are discussed in detail. These include the thermodynamics and heat transfer aspects of the solution. Thermodynamic relations are given for pure hydrogen as the fuel and then gas mixture as the fuel. CO2 capture by chemical or physical sorption and membrane separation have been the dominant fields of research within post- and pre-combustion CO2 capture from power cycles and industrial processes. For a selected range of conditions, potential applications for anode off gas cryogenic separation have been evaluated with respect to energy consumption and profits obtained. For all applications of anode off gas cryogenic separation, specific power consumption and obtainable fuel savings are sensitive to flue-gas or synthesis-gas. However, for certain applications anode off gas cryogenic separation shows promising potential and highly competitive energy figures compared to baseline technology giving an increase in efficiency of 29.58% relative to base values.

Abstract:

Statement of the Problem: Due to the limitation in natural energy resources and the growing concern for environmental protection, alternative power generation technologies have become very important. The perovskite structures have been research subjects for photoluminescence, electroluminescence and catalyst applications. The objective of this study has been to develop less toxic, water-based processes for high efficiency perovskite solar cells. It is therefore essential to design and match the energy levels and interfacial characteristics between the perovskite sensitizers and the contact metal layers. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Fluorine-tin oxide-coated glass substrate was cleaned, then surface-treated with plasma and UV light irradiation to increase its hydrophilicity. The electron-transport layer composed of titanium dioxide dense layer and then a mesoporous layer was spin-coated and further annealed. A precursor solution of lead nitrate was used to plate lead dioxide film which was immersed in MAI to create the MAPbI3 perovskite nanostructured thin film. Spiro- OMeTAD was used as the hole-transport layer and silver was applied as the cathode.

Conclusion & Significance: Since developing less toxic, water-based precursor formulation it has been encouraging to find better deposition method for lead precursor, thus the perovskite nanostructure. After the parameters have been optimized, long time stability characterization could be carried out for the new high efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:

Licorice derived from the roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (Fabaceae) is one of the most widely-used traditional herbal medicines in China. It has been reported to possess significant analgesic activity for treating spastic pain. The aim of this study is to investigate the spasmolytic molecular mechanism of licorice on oxytocin-induced uterine contractions and predict the relevant bioactive constituents in the aqueous extract. The aqueous extraction from licorice inhibited the amplitude and frequency of uterine contraction in a concentration-dependent manner. A morphological examination showed that myometrial smooth muscle cells of oxytocin-stimulated group were oval-shaped and arranged irregularly, while those with a single centrally located nucleus of control and licorice-treated groups were fusiform and arranged orderly. The percentage of phosphorylation of HSP27 at Ser-15 residue increased up to 50.33% at 60 min after oxytocin stimulation. Furthermore, this increase was significantly suppressed by licorice treatment at the concentration of 0.2 and 0.4 mg/mL. Co-localization between HSP27 and α-SMA was observed in the myometrial tissues, especially along the actin bundles in the oxytocin-stimulated group. On the contrary, the co-localization was no longer shown after treatment with licorice. Additionally, employing ChemGPS-NP provided support for a preliminary assignment of liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin as protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors in addition to liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, liquiritin and isoliquiritin as MAPK-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2) inhibitors. These assigned compounds were docked with corresponding crystal structures of respective proteins with negative and low binding energy which indicated a high affinity and tight binding capacity for the active site of the kinases. These results suggest that licorice exerts its spasmolytic effect through inhibiting the phosphorylation of HSP27 to alter the interaction between HSP27 and actin. Furthermore, our results provide support for the prediction that potential bioactive constituents from aqueous licorice extract inhibit the relevant up-stream kinases that phosphorylate HSP27

Abstract:

In Costa Rica there is a great variety of agricultural residues that are presenting an environmental problem. Due to this, two of the main residues have been studied: coffee pulp and pineapple stubble for energy purposes. For this purpose, pellets were obtained from them and from a mixture made up in a 50:50 mass ratio of each residue. The study was performed under different values of moisture and particle size for each pellet processing. Unit density and apparent density were determined with values between 1.09 kg/dm3 to 1.32 kg/dm3, 555.30 kg/m3 to 578.23 kg/m3 respectively. In the case of friability and durability results were found with values ranging from 0.89 to 0.99 and 92.29% to 98.33% respectively values that meet the requirements of the standard. It was determined that the physical properties improved for higher moisture values and lower particle size. In addition, the material used was characterized by finding high contents of sulfur, chlorine and nitrogen in the pineapple stubble that are above that recommended in the standard. The coffee pulp fulfilled all the established in the standard and presented values of lignin superior to the pineapple stubble benefiting the process of pelletizing.

He was the former division Director of Technology Transfer and Commercialization division in Korea Institute of Energy Research from 2012 to 2014. He obtained PhD in Energy Policy (Energy Economy), Korea Polytechnic University, Korea in 2009.

Abstract:

Gyeongbuk provincial government, Korea needs to establish a regional energy plan in 2015 for the next 5 years from 2015 until 2019. It accords to the national basic energy law that every regional provincial government in Korea should implement its regional energy plan every 5-year for the promotion of local economy and sustainable development. Gyeongbuk provincial government has to re-establish a 5-year regional energy plan for the promotion of a specialized regional mid-term energy plan in Gyeongbuk province for coping with the rapid change of energy environment and climate change. In this research, we make a short-list of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by the survey of experts and consideration of its regional environment. We make a prioritization of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by using multi-criteria decision making approach. 2-tier hierarchy is built and it is composed of criteria accounting for local characteristics, market and government policy. Local characteristics consist of local energy demand, timeliness of starting new energy project and possibility of role model in other regional energy plans. In case of market, it accounts for possibility of new regional energy industry creation and job creation possibility. Government policy is composed of national policy adherence, strengthening the capacity of local industry for the climate change and easy to acquire local energy technology. We execute the survey of experts before we prioritize the short-listed energy projects. The analytic hierarchy process which uses 9-points scale is employed for assessing and prioritizing the short-listed of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by making pairwise comparisons of criteria, alternatives and consistency ratio check. The results of this research will provide regional decision makers and regional government officers with the critical decision making data when they focus on the execution of proper regional energy projects considering regional energy environment and limited regional resources including R&D and dissemination of energy related funds.

Tewodros Getachew Bekele is a Young Research Member of Ethiopia Biotechnology Institute which was established in 2016. He has earned his Undergraduate degree from Bahir Dar University in Chemical Engineering and has three years of experience in the manufacturing industry (Sugarcane industry) as a Shift Supervisor. In 2014, he got a Scholarship from Government of Japan and studied MSc in Green Science and Engineering at Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan. His research interest is to study about molecular assembly and gel synthesis using supramolecular natural interaction.

Abstract:

Simple sugars play vital role in biological functions in living cells. The three commonly known monosaccharides glucose, galactose and fructose used as energy source by organisms. Glucose, exclusively brain fuel has to be regulated in human body to prevent our brain from any potential fuel shortage. Significant drop in blood sugar level can cause lack of concentration, dizziness and headache. Due to this reason it is very critical to develop a chemical sensor that is cheap, simple to use, rapid and efficient to measure and monitor blood glucose level. Supramolecular cyclodextrin polymeric gel is synthesized for the separation of monosacchrides in aqueous solution. A nanometric hollow molecule i.e. cyclodextrin is polymerized by using polymerizing agent and form inclusion complexation with naphthalene probe. Boronic acid is used as sugar recognition terminal, naphthalene as reporter site and alkyl chain as a tail to maximize inclusion complexation. The adsorption phenomenon was investigated by using HPLC, UV-VIS spectrometer and Fluorescence spectrometer. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was analyzed by using Langmuir modeling. Boronic Naphthalene (B-Nap-Cn) probe was synthesized for selective binding by reacting with cis-1,2-diol and cis-1,3-diols to form reversible covalent complexes. Probes with alkyl chain length of C-4, C-8 and C-12 were synthesized to analyze chain length effect. Results showed that fructose and glucose showed high amount of adsorption towards B-Nap-C4/β-CyD gels and increase in alkyl chain resulted decrease in amount of adsorption for glucose, fructose and galactose. In B-Nap-C4/γ-CyD gel adsorption analysis all three sugars had showed increase in adsorption amount with increasing concentration. This is probably the larger cavity γ-CD could enable probes to freely adjust their active side to bind the sugar. In Summary, B-Nap-Cn incorporated supramolecular cyclodextrin polymeric gel is promising chemical sensor that can be utilized to examine blood sugar level.
