Prof. Maria graduated in chemistry and physics at University “Babes -Bolyai”, Romania. was manager at College of Natural Sciences “Emil Racovita”, Brasov. PhD. Diploma at Transilvania University on waste materials used for wastewater treatment. Vicepresident of Chemistry Society Romania, branch Brasov. Researcher on materials zeolites, fly ash used for removal dyes, heavy metals and surfactants from wastewater. Interculturale experience with Europen countries was developed on Erasmus and Comemius projects. 34 papers published in ISI journals with FI>2. (h index=11) in Adsorption, Catalysis Today, Applied Surface Science, Hazardous Materials Journals and 5 books and got more than 8 of awards given by National Authority for Scientific Research from Romania for the highly research in new materials obtained from fly ash. Abstract:
This work is focused on fly ash –material with adsorption properties used for advanced wastewater treatment, aiming at simultaneous removal of complex pollutant. There are gradually analysed substrates containing fly ash, modified fly ash by step–wise decreasing the alkali concentration down to 0.1N, alone or combined with natural adsorbents (bentonite, diatomite) and with photocatalysts (TiO2, WO3). Previous results were presented when using TiO2-photocatalyst and FA[1], and a comparative discussion is further developed in systems also containing WO3. Removal of pollutants like dyes with a complex structure (azo-, antrachinone, metal-complex dyes), heavy metals cations, surfactants from wastewater was investigated by adsorption and photodegradation onto a lot of substrates [2]. The materials obtained from FA and WO3, TiO2, used in removing pollutants from wastewater [2,3]. Materials zeolite obtained from FA are an excellent adsorbent for heavy metals [4]. New materials obtained from FA and surfactants as template were investigated for advance removal pollutants. The removal processes are investigated in dark (adsorption) and under UV illumination (adsorption + photocatalysis) in systems containing: (a) a single dye (Bemacid Blau; (b) one reactive dye or Bemacid Rot with Cu2+; (c) Mhetylen Bleu or Methyl Orange with Cu2+, Cd2+ and mixtures of two dyes (BB+BR) and Cu2+. Tests were done in batch experiments, under stirring. The dye specific uptake by adsorption-photodegradation depends on the fly ash, the ratio FA-NaOH:TiO2, FA-NaOH:WO3, the dye type, the initial concentration of dye, the pH value in the system, the contact time, the mass of substrate. All these parameters are investigated and the optimised results are presented. The fly ash – wide band gap semiconductor systems develop two simultaneous processes: photodegradation and adsorption and the results are presented when treating wastewaters loaded with dyes, heavy metals, surfactants; the results show these combinations as a viable, low cost and up-scalable and sustainable technology.

Biography:
Hisakazu Okamura is a Faculty of Urban Innovation, Asia University in Tokyo Japan has been leading worldwide smart-city projects in his over 32-year career in IBM Japan and in the new role of teaching smart-city and Big Data at the newly developed faculty (2016) for smart-city in Asia University in Tokyo Japan. From 350 citizen, snowy small village project to the largest Japanese $1B 340 MHz Photovoltaic plant to a project supporting the mayor of New Orleans, the range of his work is highly diverse. His book “Smart-city” published in 2011 became the guidebook for smart-city business in Japan. In 2017, International NPO CSR day awarded him the recognition of one of the “50 most impactful smart-city leaders of the world”. His philosophy for smart-city thinking is: “Only healthy business can help people and society be sustainable.”
Abstract:
Smart-city, variety of the meaning of this word has been understood differently by many countries. I was leading the business of this smart-city in IBM Japan for decades, matter of fact we called it as smarter cities. Prior to the announcement of the smarter cities in 2008 with IBM, I established an environmental business unit in IBM Japan and collaborating the fellows in IBM all over the world. In the early stage of the city, consideration was supported by the global movement of the CO2 consideration started with COP. Especially COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009, the mood of global consistent agreement for the global warming correspondence became the peak in discussion. However, the result was the Paris agreement which was held in 2016, 7 years later. Besides, the IBM and the IT companies were leading smartcity business as a city innovation project supported by IT system by considering the global warming counter measurement, mainly the countries in Asia have been rushing to re-innovate super cities with the investment of China and European companies. Surely, we wanted to save this planet by considering energy efficient cities on green economy with the banner as “smart city” on but the smart city projects looking only at the economy were growing outside US and Japan. On the other hand in 2011, Japan that had been leading green economy was hit by the
great earth quake had only the choice to escape the green economy due to the energy crisis. In Asia, we have many developing and emerging countries that want to be developed countries on the investment from China and Europe. Different from the fundamental country needs and green economy requirements, they are rushing to be the high energy using countries because those investors want to implement their own solutions not the fundamental requests from poverty, water security and serious disease but high-tech roads and super transportations.

Biography:
Merritt T Cooke Founded the China Partnership of Greater Philadelphia in 2011 as a 501(c)(3) public-private platform to accelerate commercial and research collaboration between the Greater Philadelphia region and China in clean energy and energy-efficient buildings. He was a 2010 Public Policy Scholar with Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC, researching the US-China clean energy relationship, particularly the interface of technology, policy and investment. His recent book is Sustaining U.S.-China Cooperation in Clean Energy was published and launched by the Wilson’s Center’s Kissinger Institute in September 2012. Previously from 2006-8, he served as Director for Asian Corporate Partnership at the World Economic Forum, the host of the Davos Annual Meeting and the ‘Summer Davos’ in China. In 2003, he was retired with the rank of Counselor as a Career-Member of the US Senior Foreign Commercial Service. During his fifteen-year career, he served as the US Government’s Senior Commercial Officer in Taipei and Berlin, as the Deputy Senior Commercial Officer in Tokyo and as Commercial Officer in Shanghai. He has received his PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985, his MA from UCB in 1981 and his BA from Princeton University in 1976.”
Abstract:
The United States and China represent the two largest economies in the world. They are also the two largest contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and in both countries, the built environment accounts for close to 40% of their emissions (in comparison to less than 30% for transportation systems). Therefore, any global effort to tackle climate change requires that energy-efficient building solutions be implemented at scale and speed in these two markets. The challenge is that, despite different commercial dynamics in the U.S. and China, both markets are characterized by jumbled incentive structures and horizontally-fragmented chains of decision-making which combine to impede the adoption of energy-efficient building solutions. The challenge of implementing energy-efficient building solutions at scale and speed in the United States and China is not primarily a challenge of technological innovation but rather a policy and behavioral challenge of aligning incentives among multiple stakeholders. For this reason, a framework combining political science at the macro level with behavioral economics in the real estate sector is utilized. The study borrows heavily from the practical experience of several programs – such as the U.S.-China EcoPartnership Program at the bi-national level and the AMPLIFY/EEB Lab Program at the global level– which have pioneered methodologies to bridge the gaps between industry players in both markets as well as between market
conditions in both countries. The adoption of energy-efficient building solutions can be expanded in scale and accelerated in speed by focusing on the key role of cities in adopting these solutions and by leveraging existing relationship networks among various cities in each country as well as existing “Sister City” relationships between cities in the two countries. As cities take center-stage as the primary sub-national actors able to realize the intended nationally determined commitments set forth at COP21 in Paris in 2015, the larger U.S. and Chinese cities have a role of outsized importance to play. There is every reason to take advantage of the best programs of implementation practice and the most well-established networks of cross-border city-to-city sharing to expand and accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient building solutions on a bi-national basis.

Abstract:
India faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and inadequate waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal. Current systems in India cannot cope up with the volumes of waste generated by an increasing urban population and this impacts on the environment and public health. The challenges and barriers are significant but so are the opportunities. India currently has no official systems for collecting and recycling plastic waste; nor are there overarching initiatives by private or public sector. Waste is collected and recycled very efficiently: waste pickers scour municipal dumps and later sell plastic items to small local plastics processors or recyclers. It is estimated that millions of tonnes of plastic waste is reclaimed this way every year. Plastic recycling in India is highly efficient but potentially hazardous. How big is plastics industry in India? India wants to double consumption of Plastics in next five years, what about its plastic waste? Main challenges is complexity and lack of transparency of the informal recycling system. Amount of plastic waste recycled, recovery of plastic waste, let us learn the “5rs” in plastics recycling growth of mega cities will need more recycling from the starting of the development. Where the plastics waste goes? saving of landfill space: let's give second life to plastics waste. What are the opportunities for recycling machine manufactures or technology providers? Abstract:
The growing demand for high efficient energy utilization of vehicles replaces hydraulic systems with electro-hydraulic actuators. The benefits of the electro-hydraulic system are energy recovery/storage, variable speed, power on demand and reduced emission. In era of electric vehicle, the electronic components (motor, power electronics and battery) for the electro-hydraulic system requires effective, reliable and long-life time technologies. The authors present a recent research on the cooling technology applied for the development of an effective brushless direct current (BLDC) motor which electronically performs rectification without brushes. In general, BLDC motor is well-known to low noise, high durability and reliability. Nonetheless, unavoidable temperature increase during operation reduces the efficiency of the motor due to increased losses.
The critical loss is resolved into iron and copper losses in accordance with the mechanisms. In this regard, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the losses induced by temperature increase. The numerical model is validated by conducting experimentation which presents excellent agreement with the simulation results. During the operation of the motor for 20 minutes, the temperatures increase up to 62.3°C and 32.2°C for stator and magnet respectively. The authors also demonstrate air cooling structure to reduce the temperatures resulting in reduced losses, increased motor efficiency and durability.

Burton C English has been evaluating renewable energy issues since 1978. His areas of concentration include market evaluation, supply chain feasibility and
economic and environmental impacts of the supply chain. These are critical components to evaluating sustainability of the catalytic systems tailored for the
structural features of biomass and its hydrocarbons. Our program evaluates supply chain costs and compares these costs to breakeven analysis of products. In addition, since 2005 we have evaluated the market size for chemical building blocks. Feasibility analysis and tradeoffs analysis between significant environmental and economic variables has been his particular interest. In addition, incorporation of the effects of risk parameters on the supply chain, economic impacts to the communities and techno-economic evaluations of the conversion system have been areas of interest.
Abstract:
In 2015, prior to the climate talks in Paris, the Obama administration wanted to take steps to limit the greenhouse gas emissions from airplanes, after EPA had declared that the aviation emissions contribute to global warming and endanger
human health. EPA deferred any ruling until seeing the report of the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The use of renewable jet fuel has the potential to decrease fuel-price uncertainties, thereby decreasing fuel-hedging costs and decreasing profit volatility. The United States Government is actively supporting the development of renewable jet fuels.
As of 2015, the standard setting organization, ASTM International, has approved five renewable jet fuels for use in aviation. This analysis examines the potential for pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) to support a renewable jet fuel industry in the United States. The objective of this study is to examine the economic feasibility of a pennycress to renewable aviation fuel plus evaluate
the potential economic impacts this industry could have on the US economy. To conduct the analysis, two models are used – POLYSYS and IMPLAN. The output from POLYSYS is used to develop economic impact input data for IMPLAN. Partial equilibrium simulation results from POLYSYS suggest that pennycress has the potential to supply approximately 800 million gallons nationally to an alternative aviation fuel industry. The economic impact of this industry has the potential to increase national economic activity by almost $19 billion and add 66,000 jobs. Many of these jobs will occur in rural areas; therefore adding value to pennycress seed by converting the oil into biofuel could enhance rural American economies

Liguo Wang has received his PhD degree in September 2017 from Department of Engineering Sciences, Uppsala University and currently is a researcher at the same university. He has seven years of research experience on Renewable Energy with specialization in Ocean Wave Energy. Abstract:
Ocean wave energy is a promising renewable source to contribute to supplying the world’s energy demand. The Division of Electricity at Uppsala University is developing a technology to capture energy from ocean waves with a wave energy converter (WEC) consisting of a linear permanent magnetic generator and a point absorber. The linear generator is placed on sea bed and is driven directly by the floating absorber. Since March 2006, multiple wave energy converters have been deployed on the Swedish west coast outside the town of Lysekil. The technology is verified by long-term operation during at sea and satisfactory reliability of the electricity generation. This thesis focuses on developing advanced control strategies for fully coupled wave energy converters subject to constraints. A nonlinear control strategy is studied in detail for a WEC subject to constraints under regular and irregular waves. Besides, two coordinated control strategies are developed to investigate the performance of a wave energy farm subject to constraints. The performance of the WECs using these control strategies are investigated in case studies and optimal PTO damping coefficients are found to maximize the output power. The results show that these control strategies can significantly improve the performance of the WECs in terms of mean power compared to a conventional control. Besides these control strategies, a wave-to-wire simulation platform is built to study the power generation control of the WEC subject to constraints. The wave-to-wire simulation platform allows both nonlinear and linear control force. The results show that there is a good agreement between the desired value and the actual value after advanced control.

Abstract:
Change in energy environment has been rapid in global energy markets. Advanced economies have been trying to build strategic energy technology development copying with environmental changes, their sustainable development and climate change. The strategic energy technology development is crucial factor for leading global green energy markets and
disseminating them in time. In this research, first stage applied scenario planning for making a framework of various scenarios with the upcoming uncertain future of energy environments. We implemented a systematic procedure composed of scenario planning and integrated two multi-criteria decision making approaches, which were the analytic hierarchy process and
TOPSIS methods, to assess 15 energy technologies and prioritize them when decision makers implemented a strategic energy technology development plan as a national level for enhancing national energy security, coping with rapid environmental changes and sustainable development. We made a short-list of 15 energy technologies including energy efficiency technologies, new and renewables and nuclear technology. In this research, we focus on case of low oil price changes and present nuclear power plant status. This research suggests how to find and generate a strategic energy technology development plan considering the selected two key uncertainty variables, including oil price changes and nuclear power plant construction, with STEEP and TOPSIS approaches in the first phase. And then, we build scenario framework considering two key criteria. We assess the case of low oil prices and present nuclear power plant by integrated two multi-criteria decision making approaches for prioritizing short-listed energy technologies. We focus on the strategic energy technology development plan. The results of this research provide decision makers for implementing the uncertain future efficiently with the strategic energy technology development with a scientific systemic procedure.

Abstract:
Methane, as natural gas or biogas is the least expensive source of biofuel. The main problem with the use of methane is its non-compressing nature. The biological upgrading of this single carbon source to biofuels as well as high value chemicals can bring new sustainable solutions to a number of industries with large environmental footprints. Today, biological engineering has provided new opportunities for metabolic system modulation and give new optimism to the concept of a methane-based bio-industry. The proposed approach is to simultaneously use methanol (MeOH) and CO2 to produce isobutanol with a future goal of going all the way back to the conversion of methane to biofuels. We have engineered E. coli cells to utilize MeOH as acarbon and energy source by expressing methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) and two enzymes from the methylotrophic HuMP pathway. The isobutanol pathway has been integrated into E. coli genome using CRISPR technology. The proposed technology is unique and innovative and has a high probability for commercial success. As global energy requirements change and grow, it is crucial that energy infrastructures need to be adapted and changed to fulfill the promises of increasing population for power generation. Hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from natural gas/methane or methanol will help to replace a significant amount of petroleum-based liquid fuel usage while at the same time will also harvest value from a wasted resource and help to mitigate climate change issues.

Abstract:
In view of the emerging research trend in bio-energy, to circumvent the effects of the impending decline in world’s petroleum reserves and environmental challenges associated with the resource, there is need for African countries to exploit their huge biomass resources towards integrated biorefinery. Nigeria is an agrarian nation with enormous biomass resources that are grossly unexploited for energy generation. Therefore, this present research is investigating the viability of the agricultural residues such as plantain biomass, rice husk, peanut skin and coconut coir from Nigeria for biorefinery operation. These residues were preliminarily analyzed for their monomeric sugar, however, in-depth investigation was focused on plantain biomass due to the enormous yields of wastes from this crop (9,455,000 ton per annual)) compared with other residues under investigation. Our preliminary work demonstrated that the various parts of the plantain biomass namely; flower (inflorescence), leaf and trunk (stem) can be excellent sources of C5 sugars – both in terms of C5 selectivity and yield. The morphology and structural composition of the biomass before and after hydrolysis were studied using SEM and FTIR analysis. The remnant fiber of the biomass was subjected to torrefaction and carbonization processes to produce value-added carbon products such as biochar, carbons for water treatment etc., BET analysis on the produced carbons showed that surface areas up to 900 m2/g can be achieved. Our work showed that developing a plantain–based biorefinery in Nigeria will impact positively on the economy of the nation with significant agriculture based opportunities in the rural areas.

Abstract:
Contemporary development in the Royal Commission of Yanbu (RCY) relies on the comprehensive set of sustainability indicators which have been developed through forty years of experience and studies. The city was built in 1974, with the concept of sustainable development for the oil and petroleum industries which serves the community with a population of 115,000. Recently, the RC won many international awards in development under the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) which is considered an indicator for positive progress in sustainability. The aim of this paper is to explore twelve sustainability indicators implemented at RCY. The proposed sustainability indicators were contributed by nine divisions.The methodology in selecting indicators in terms of measurable success was crafted through the knowledge of local and international organizations such as UNDP, European Union (EU) and Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The findings show that RCY has predominantly made excellent progress in sustainability by accomplishing the goal of efficiency in resources and materials. There are twelve categories designed for sustainable development at the RCY. It contains a comprehensive set of indicators updated annually. In conclusion, sustainability indicators influence the growth of income and made harmonious between the economies and the community at RCY.

Abstract:
Fossil fuel is presently the major source for electricity production and is believed to be a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Enormous effort has therefore been put on the development and application of green energy sources. Wind is a promising alternative, which has the potential to be a major power source in future power systems. Huge investments are being made in this sector, which has led to considerable advancement in wind power technology. It is expected that wind power installations will grow substantially to produce clean energy in electric power systems. Wind penetration, which is defined as the ratio of the installed wind capacity to the total installed capacity
of a power system is currently about 5% in the Saskatchewan province of Canada. It is expected to increase to over 20% by the next decade. This trend is seen in many jurisdictions around the world. The characteristics of wind power generation is significantly different from that of other conventional generating plants which dictates a need for wind models and techniques appropriately responsive to these characteristics. An increasing number of wind farms located at different sites with varying geographical terrains are being connected to power systems as the wind power penetration continues to grow. The diversity in the wind speed at the various sites can have significant influence on the variability of the overall system generation. This in turn affects system performance and reliability. The wind generation models required for system reliability assessment should therefore appropriately represent the diversity in wind generation profiles. This becomes more important especially at high penetration levels expected in the near future. Time-synchronized data from all the wind farms are generally required to incorporate this correlation in the analysis and hence to accurately model the combined wind generation characteristics. This paper uses an analytical technique to create wind generation models of diverse wind farms and quantifies the reliability benefit to the power system in terms of wind capacity credit and the increase in peak load carrying capability of a wind-integrated power system.

He obtained his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark within the Marie Curie Training Network, Advanced Solar Heating and Cooling for Buildings SOLNET (Solar Thermal Network) project in 2010. SOLNET was the first international PhD education program on Solar Thermal Engineering with partners from nine universities and seven European countries supported by the European Commission. He is an expert in renewable energy, building energy modeling and performance modeling applications such as CFD and daylighting modeling. He is proficient in many modeling and simulation programs and related applications, such as EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder, Google SketchUp, Ecotect, Radiance, Star CCM+ and FLUENT, TRNSYS, Trane Trace among others. This talk presents some recommendations for the current challenges, development and implementation of renewable energy technologies in the US. Europe has been for several years forefront of renewable energy technology in the world. Europe has presented great innovations in applying sustainable development and renewable energy practices into Europeans daily
life. With the increase in the renewable market in China and the rest of the world, it is essential for US companies to be more involved in the state of the art renewable energy technology in US and around the globe. The challenges for US would be pulling out from Paris agreement, state level not federal level law, inefficient buildings, plants and automobiles, use of fossil fuels, poor renewable energy infrastructure and final renewable energy cost for American family. The opportunities and hope would be DOE’s 20% Wind energy production by 2030 report, renewable energy job creation, 35 states with 70% of the total US net power with the overall target averages 20% of electricity from renewables by 2020 and diversifying risk of energy route by investing in many different states. Last but not least, the author will focus on renewable energy education based on his practical study of solar thermal in Europe and working in US afterwards and will compare the challenges, opportunities and practices of renewable energy and energy efficiency in two sides of Atlantic Ocean and will propose joint European and American renewable energy schools and connection with the European universities counterpart for the joint renewable energy program.

The building industry has a love-hate relationship with technology and has been slow to adopt it. This trend is particularly applicable to the use of computer-based analysis in support of high-performance building design with the ultimate goal of zero emission buildings. This lecture will deconstruct the current state of how industry uses technology within this domain, the opportunities that exist for the near future and the challenges in effectively implementing these opportunities. Current R&D efforts at Perkins+Will for web-based energy and daylighting simulation, optimization and visualization using cloud computing environments will be highlighted as one possible strategy for rapid, scalable, accurate and meaningful integration of technology into the architectural design process. A vision of how this strategy’s success will impact and support the green energy industry as a whole and vice versa, will be presented to and interactively evaluated with the audience.

With apologies to Joni Mitchell, many companies are purchasing energy saving products and are being pursued by companies representing energy components designed be sold on the basis of sustainability and incentives. Businesses that are seeking energy cost reductions rarely know if the strategy they select will financially benefit them or the company that designed and installs their sustainable systems. This article suggests a new strategy to accurately analyze past, existing and future energy costs and develop a control system leading to corporate usage understanding, control and reduction of energy. All businesses understand “you cannot control something you do not understand.” That is particularly true with energy and the related economical management. For example, a relatively efficient hotel may have utility expenses at 6% of their total budget, a food processor probably much higher and a warehouse somewhere in between. An efficient food processor makes
2% to 5% profit on their products. A LED or solar company will target businesses with the goal of selling the product they have on hand as a solution to reducing energy demand and the associated utility cost. LED or solar companies are not in the business of providing accurate long-term studies of energy usage. Their target is to provide products that reduce or offset energy usage. To do more is counter-productive. Similarly, the green sustainable industry cannot survive solely on grants and tax incentives. Addressing 20% of the utility costs through control of energy use can result in a 40% increase in profits with no other change in business operations. There is little benefit for a utility to encourage their customers to reduce usage and degrade their own revenue stream. Unfortunately, cost saving analyses provided by an energy company, is usually spotty, unreliable and often inaccurate.

Renewable Energy is critical for our future energy needs for multiple reasons. The pressing issue of Climate Change requires that we transition to clean energy sources as rapidly as possible, as well as leave the overwhelming majority of fossil fuel reserves in the ground as a means to slow the rate of temperature increase that we have been observing this over the past century.
The benefits are manifold. No emissions from energy generation sources mean cleaner air, water and land for people and the ecosystem. Free energy sources such as the wind, the sun and the flow of water ultimately mean lower electricity prices for consumers in the long term and increased economic prosperity for society, as funds spent on energy can be invested elsewhere.
The prices for renewable energy technologies are falling year after year and the spread of implementation is increasing rapidly. It is the fastest growing job sector in the United States. New York and other states have set mandates for renewable energy sources. New York is required to produce 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. California has set the mandate for 100% renewable energy by 2045. 100% renewable energy is the goal and objective, for individual states, The United States and The World as a whole. The faster we achieve this, the quicker we will see the effects of climate change slow down and ultimately we will see a return to equilibrium planet temperatures if we cease emissions and the use of fossil fuels for energy. Many see this as an incredible opportunity to transform modern society from using highly polluting sources of energy, to using non-emitting advanced forms of clean energy. This means the evolution of our energy technologies and the evolution and modernization of our civilization.

The most of them are PVs. Government make some amendment on FIT from 2017. Their main purpose is to meet energy mix at 2030 and lower the cost of FIT at the same time. There are 4 main factors: Policy and regulation, Power generation Technology (including cost), Finance and power system. Policy and regulation is the main key. But, many company rely on it excessively. Cost reduction and new business model is highly needed. Finance sector also rely on FIT. But it is also needed to invest new business scheme. Power system in Japan is very different from those in other countries. Inter connection is limited not only with other country but also within Japan. To make maximum use of the electricity generated from renewable energies, the technology and operation policy ofpower system have to be changed dramatically. Technological innovation for smart grid has to be introduced.

Oil extraction efficiency is the percentage of oil extracted from the total oil available in the total mass, of any feedstock. In the soybean oil industry, efficiency is approximately 95%. In the rapeseed industry, efficiency is approximately 98.5%. In the palm oil industry, efficiency is close to 50%! It is, without a question, the industry with the worst Oil Extraction Efficiency of any oil industry and it represents an unbelievable waste, which has taken a big toll on the environment. With the increase of demand of palm oil in the last decade, for many different industries, the industry has been focusing on plantations, cutting or burning tropical forests, to produce more palm oil. But efficiencies have only marginally increased. IncBio’s technology has been under development for more than 5 years and it has been industrially implemented for 2 years. After the first year of learning from issues that were not expected, the plant has been running for a year with and OER (Oil Extraction Rate) above 25%, when the national average for Malaysia is 20.1%. This represents an Oil Extraction Efficiency of 62.5%, or an increase of 25% over the current technology. While there is still a lot of possibilities for growth, this represents a major step in an industry that is known for hurting the environment. This can actually increase palm oil production by 25%, maintaining the same plantations, without cutting or burning any more trees.

Abstract:
Providing travel-related energy and environmental information to transport users is becoming increasingly relevant. However, the impact of providing such information on users’ travel behavior is yet to be determined. This research examines the perceptions and preferences of the fuel consumption costs, GHG social costs and health-related air pollution costs and the influence such information have on travel behavior. Examining the case of transport users of Montreal, Canada with a pilot survey, we found that the respondents are generally unaware of the energy and environmental footprints of theirntravel. Approximately, 70% of the respondents are not able to estimate GHG social costs and health-related air pollution costs across different modes. The respondents who could provide their perceived costs generally overestimate these costs and interestingly perceive higher environmental costs for public transport (metro) compared to cars. They also prefer to receive such information in monetary units rather than in their own units (e.g., grams of emissions) and they are more comfortable in receiving the information through mobile applications over other tools/means (GPS devices, radio and so on). The research also finds that energy and environmental information can influence respondents’ travel decisions especially their route choices. Finally, the respondents are willing to pay an average of $6/month in exchange for obtaining the information.

The growing demand for high efficient energy utilization of vehicles replaces hydraulic systems with electro-hydraulic actuators. The benefits of the electro-hydraulic system are energy recovery/storage, variable speed, power on demand and reduced emission. In era of electric vehicle, the electronic components (motor, power electronics and battery) for the electro-hydraulic system requires effective, reliable and long-life time technologies. The authors present a recent research on the cooling technology applied for the development of an effective brushless direct current (BLDC) motor which electronically performs rectification without brushes. In general, BLDC motor is well-known to low noise, high durability and reliability. Nonetheless, unavoidable temperature increase during operation reduces the efficiency of the motor due to increased losses. The critical loss is resolved into iron and copper losses in accordance with the mechanisms. In this regard, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the losses induced by temperature increase. The numerical model is validated by conducting experimentation which presents excellent agreement with the simulation results. During the operation of the motor for 20 minutes, the temperatures increase up to 62.3°C and 32.2°C for stator and magnet respectively. The authors also demonstrate air cooling structure to reduce the temperatures resulting in reduced losses, increased motor efficiency and durability.

Stephen W Brooks is the Chief of the Assets and Logistics Management Division (ALM) of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) Glynco campus. As Chief of ALM, he is responsible for all the personal property located at four FLETC sites. This includes 32,691 assets valued at $96,190,410.39 dollars located in Charleston South Carolina, Cheltenham, Maryland and Artesia, New Mexico. He oversees the business lines of inventory management, fleet management, mail management, property disposal and the recycling program. In 2015, he was named the 2015 sustainability hero for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for his innovations in recycling solid waste generated by law enforcement firearms training. He has published in recycling and has been a Noted Speaker at the 2015 Southeastern Recycling Conference in San Destin, Florida and the 2015 Georgia Recycling Coalition Conference on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

A common reason given for not recycling is that it is not cost effective and too costly to do. To be successful is easy but one should shift paradigms to make it work. Whether you are an educational campus, training facility or community, it can be done effectively and efficiently. It will take a shift in culture and thinking in the beginning. That first shift is to stop thinking of all solid waste as “trash”, but rather a commodity that has monetary value in today’s market place of shrinking resources. Recyclable commodities such as old corrugated cardboard (OCC), standard office paper (SOP), aluminum drink cans are no different that gold, orange juice or pork bellies, they are sold to those companies that need the recyclables as raw material to keep their mills operating, personnel employed and their products flowing into the stream of commerce around the globe. These recyclable commodities are crucial to saving natural resources when they are processed back into their natural states to begin the manufacturing process all over again. Aluminum can be recycled indefinitely and results in a 95% energy savings and reduces pollution by 95% over tradition saves 4 lbs. of bauxite from being smelting for pound of aluminum recycled. Recycling not only generates positive revenue streams but also saves natural resources but also allows for cost avoidance associated with
traditional waste collection and disposal.

He also received a Professor Award of the Year and a distinguished Professor in Research Award at UOU. His current research interests include visible light driven photocatalytic treatments of organics and VOCs, photocatalytic CO2 conversion into solar fuels, photo-electrochemical H2 production, CO2 sequestration using nano zeolites and nanocomposites, adsorption removal of organics and heavy metals, carbon aerogel and bead and biochar application. A large portion of municipal plastic wastes consists of significant amount of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products containing hazardous chlorine element. During their disposal activities such as incineration, a lot of toxic chemicals including hydrogen chloride, chlorine gas, dioxins and furans can be released into environment. Therefore, proper development of selective separation methods of PVC containing chlorine is necessary before applying disposal or material recycling processes. However, it has been difficult to separate selectively PVC from mixtures of plastics having similar appearance density i.e. PVC and PET mixture (PET 1.38 g/cm³ and PVC 1.42 g/cm³). This study presents a one-step selective separation technique of PVC using H2O2 solution to promote hydrophilicity development on PVC surface under ultrasonic irrigation. The ultrasonic treatment helped to decrease air bubbles attachment on PVC surface which can make settling down of treated PVC to the bottom of the flotation reactor. However, the PET treated under the ultrasonic environment was easily floated over because it was still kept hydrophobicity. The combined treatment of low concentration of H2O2 and ultrasonic irrigation for 30 min showed 100% purity and recovery of the PVC separated from PET which could be a suitable and inexpensive way to improve plastic recycling quality through selective separation of PVC with selective building of hydrophilicity on PVC surface.

He has also developed Red Mud based synthetic radiation shielding aggregates using these aggregates developed radiation shielding concrete for medical installations and strategic sector. He has two US patents granted in his credit and has 24 publications in international and national journals, 59 publications in international and national conference proceedings. He is the recipient of nine Awards in different categories at CSIR-AMPRI, Bhopal India, guided 15 MTech students and two students perusing PhD under his guidance.
Abstract:
Geopolymer is a new technology towards greener environment as it utilizes industrial waste like fly ash, metakaolin, blast furnace slag etc in bulk quantity. The geopolymer technology was first introduced by Professor Joseph Davidovits of France in 1978. His work shows that the adoption of the geopolymers could reduce the CO2 emission caused due to cement industries. The development of geopolymer system is an important step towards the production of environment friendly materials. Geopolymerization involves a chemical reaction between various alumino silicate precursors with alkali metal silicates under strong alkaline conditions yielding polymeric –Si-O-Al-O- bonds, which lead to geopolymers by polycondensation. In present research work an attempt has been made to develop high strength geopolymer mortar using industrial waste fly ash from Satpura thermal power plant Sarni (M.P) India and Rice husk from agro industries. Sodium hydroxide and Sodium meta silicate were used as conventional alkaline activator. Rice husk was used for the synthesis of in-situ silicates for development of inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator. For the first time this inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator was developed by CSIR-AMPRI Bhopal India for multifunctional applications. Patent filed in India and USA and its application number is 0088NF/2016/201611019506 Dated 30, March 2016. The developed inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator was used with conventional alkaline activator in different percentages by weight of fly ash. The percentage range chosen were 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%. Fly ash based geopolymer mortar cubes samples were thermal cured in hot air oven for 48 hours at 600C and then the cubes samples were left at ambient temperature. Five batches of inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator and one batch of reference conventional geopolymer mortar were mix design and three cube samples for each batch were tested at 3, 7 and 14 days respectively for compressive strength. The conventional geopolymer mortar prepared with alkaline activator of optimized 12.5 molar solution. The compressive strength of conventional geopolymer mortar was found to be 35.9 MPa at 14 days which was compared with the geopolymer mortar developed using inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator and it was found that maximum compressive strength of 55 MPa at 14 days was achieved after adding 2% of inorganic organic hybrid alkaline activator. The developed high strength geopolymer mortar can be used for production of prefabricated building components

Abstract:
The integrated management of media based (both water and air) pollutants is the vital at current as the management and legalization of individual pollutant is very difficult. Integration of various environmental aspects associated with activities of production processes is one of the challenges in industrial sectors. It is of vital concern to find the scientific way of integration of media based pollutants for today. Based on amount and kind of media based pollutants, Integrated Environmental Performance Score (IEPS) is calculated applying Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and other Environmental Impacts (TRACI). The potential impacts of individual pollutants have been modeled for water-based pollutants viz., Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Phosphorous (TP) and Total Nitrogen (TN) and air pollutants viz.,
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Oxides of Sulphur (SOx) and Particles Matter (PM10). A kilogram of individual pollutants is taken in modeling to compute the individual impact categories of unit pollutants. The EPS penalty of TN is obtained as highest score of 189.70 i.e. 90.82% shares among six pollutants. The total penalty score for TP, PM10, TN, NOx and SOx, is derived as 13.53 (6.48%), 2.59 (1.24%), 1.30 (0.62%), 1.30 (0.62%) and 0.44 (0.21%), respectively. Hence, it is necessary to integrate effects of pollutants as per the scientific and justified impact caused by individual pollutants derived from the industrial facilities. Therefore, this study recommends for the compliance of EPS penalty of the pollutants based on a result of TRACI. This helps to enforce a scientific and justified polluters’ pay principle.

Abstract:
Street lighting is one of most critical elements of urban infrastructure. It is a key service that public authorities need to provide for ensuring adequate lighting on roads which leads to enhanced safety and security in the city as well as improving visibility during evenings and night. The use of energy efficient technologies like LEDs has the potential to save costs because of reduction in electricity consumption. In India, the Urban local bodies or ULBs (also called municipalities) are responsible for deploying, maintaining and replacing the street lights. The primary financing options available to finance the lighting upgrades are via internal funding through capital budgets, debt financing or via energy performance contracts with Energy Service Companies (ESCOs). This study takes an innovative approach in conjunction with existing financing mechanisms, by partially utilizing a crowd funding framework to pay for the street lighting upgrades. The three pillars of this proposed model will be: ESCO, Municipality and the Citizens. The success of a Public- Public partnership model can prove to be the cornerstone of other such models in the energy sector. The municipalities can upgrade the infrastructure at no additional costs and simultaneously cut down on their expensive operation and maintenance. After proposing a program structure, this paper will discuss the legal, economic, social and technical factors affecting the feasibility of the proposed structure in the Indian context. This work focuses specifically on tier 2 cities in India, which are defined broadly on the parameters of population (demographics), finance (living costs) and infrastructure (transport systems). This will be followed by a summary of the potential risks and challenges that are inherent in the model and how to address them.

Abstract:
In alkaline surfactant enhanced oil recovery (ASEOR) an alkali and surfactant/surfactants are used to recover the residual oil that remains after secondary brine flooding. The alkali, which is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) in this case reacts with acidic components in the crude oil to form surface-active substances. A GC-MS spectrum of Upper Assam crude oil reveals the presence of carboxylic acid groups leading to in-situ formation of surfactants which in turn decreases the interfacial tension (IFT) between the oleic and aqueous phases for better oil recovery. While the anionic surfactants used were Black Liquor (BL) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS). The Critical Micellar concentration (CMC) of BL and SDS one at a time was added to NaOH to enhance the effectiveness of NaOH in further decreasing the IFT of the Alkali-Surfactant (AS) slugs. The paper also make an attempt to study the adsorptive nature of the AS slugs. The best fit adsorption isotherm was derived by using SciDAVis scaled Levenberg - Marquaradt algorithm regression co-efficient.

Liquid fuels produced from biomass via Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis have great potential to produce high-performance, environmentally friendly clean and high-quality transportation fuels; mainly due to the absence of aromatic compounds, SOx and NOx. Currently, there are three main aspects for consideration regarding the FT synthesis processes. Firstly, there exists the FT synthesis reaction mechanism, the details of which are still not fully understood. Furthermore, from the outlook of chemical engineering, there is the design and scale-up of the commercial FT synthesis plant in which studies of the comprehensive mathematical modelling of the reactor hydrodynamics, reaction kinetics mechanisms as well as optimization study play significant roles. In fact, to reach the ideal performance of the FT synthesis process, a precise comprehensive mathematical modelling along with chemical reaction kinetics mechanisms that can describe the product distribution of FT synthesis is essential. This research has been focused on production of biodiesel (ultra-clean transportation fuels) from biomass via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process at the presence of supported cobalt catalyst (37%Co/SiO2). The aim was to
develop a comprehensive mathematical model of a catalytic fixed-bed reactor along with comprehensive chemical kinetics model of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction mechanism in order to investigate the conversion, as well as productivity and selectivity of gasoline, diesel and wax based on required application as this process can play a major role in solving the world's current energy problems and is crucial to industrial practice, being a prerequisite for industrial process design, optimization and simulation. Therefore, a novel kinetic mechanism along with comprehensive novel mathematical model of the fixedbed catalytic FT synthesis reactor was established. The results indicated that the novel developed kinetic model based on a combination of alkyl/alkenyl mechanism for FT reactions (for production of n-paraffins and α-olefins compounds) along with formate mechanism for WGS reaction can provide the most accurate predictions. In order to enhance the performance of the FT synthesis process, first the parametric studies were performed to numerically investigate the effects of operating conditions on the catalytic performance of the fixed bed FT synthesis reactor over 37%Co/SiO2. The reaction temperature, total pressure, space velocity and H2/CO molar ratio were tested to see how effective they are. Those parameters that have the most significant
effects were then included in the multi-objective optimization process in MATLAB programming software using advance Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA–II) to optimize the productivities and conversion. My advance codes and optimization process gave rise to a set of trade-off optimal solutions known as Pareto-optimal solutions. As a result, the Paretofront solutions were established in order to be used as a dynamic database for the specific requirement. Different operating conditions from the obtained database were selected which privileged the optimization of a particular output for example increasing the production of bio-diesel fuel, increasing the conversion rate of bio-syngas species (CO and H2), decreasing of CO2 emissions and decreasing the production of undesired CH4 and lighter hydrocarbon compounds.

Mainstream economists have used various growth models to predict the interaction between sustainable economic growth and the endless accumulation of capital while environmental concerns and their negative externalities are left out in most cases. In this paper, I will present a structural economic model that explicitly allows for the interaction between an economy and an ecosystem. The proposed model indicates that given a wide range of development and socio-economic infrastructure while population growth might be a reason for the constant growth trajectory, it has an adverse effect due to the constraints of resources and the environment. This is because economic activities and population growth increase ecological disordering as they downgrade the environment, while the later element has a negative impact on living standards. Considering different scenarios of utilizing renewable energy for economic growth, a feasible endurance factor for sustainable development might promote the methods of using the substituted energy and recycling methods. Throughout the whole world, there are isolated areas where access to an electricity grid is too expensive. Diesel generators have been widely used for a long time because of the low initial cost but at the same time, they have high running and maintenance cost. As a matter of fact, the diesel generator has many impact factors towards the environment such as producing of CO2 gas. Therefore, to avoid environmental pollution, global warming and ozone layer damage renewable energy sources are the appropriate alternative sources. With all renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal, solar photovoltaic energy is primarily used because of its clean, pollution-free and inexhaustible nature. In the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, the hot outdoor climate induces a necessity for cooling inside the buildings. Particularly, the solar radiations are significant throughout the whole year. Using air conditioning is very common in Saudi Arabia and sometimes overused, leading to high peak loads for the electricity grid. Hence, the idea is to use the energy from the solar radiations to run the appliances and air conditioning system to reduce the peak demand on the electrical grid. In addition, when using solar panels, it is preferable to immediately use the solar energy than to keep it for later. Therefore, as to avoid using much electricity from the grid at night to run the chillers, the idea is to produce and store during the day by having the battery backup system.

Statement of the Problem: The global energy prospective is quiet fluctuating. The energy markets are moving towards technological growth and environmental concern. In this aspect, Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for conversion of organic matter into electricity for recovering green energy are becoming significant. Soil has been used to generate electricity in MFCs and shown several potential applications in today’s world. Whereas, usage of dried leaves having a high source of organic content with soil types in an MFC is not studied before and it is novel. The main aim of this study is to address the effect of soil types on the electricity production, nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas emissions from MFCs loaded with dried leaves.
Methodology: Experiments were carried out in single chambered MFCs equipped with air cathode and carbon felt anode operated for 109 days at room temperature. Two different soil types such as sand and clay were used. Dried leaves were collected from Morgan Arboretum forest reserve, McGill University, Canada. Voltage readings with 500 to 1150 Ω external resistances were measured continuously for study period. MFCs were monitored regularly for gas emissions and changes in nitrogen compounds.
Findings: Sandy soil used in the study had 100% sand and clay soil had 40% clay, 38.5% silt and 21.50% sand. Dried leaves had 72% of organic matter with 42% of carbon content. Both MFCs with sand and clay soil with dried leaves gave continuous electricity production throughout the study period with maximum power density of 29.2 mW/m3 (1.9 mW/m2) and 23.8 mW/m3 (1.6 mW/m2), respectively. Clay soil MFC had higher methane emissions (27%) than sandy soil. Nitrogen profiles showed nitrogen uptake by soils and its possible nitrogen pathways. Conclusion & Significance: The study demonstrated that the soil types with dried leaves have significant impact on electricity generation and nutrient cycling in MFCs. It has potential for production of renewable energy and climate change mitigation.

The environmental issues such as global warming, climate change and environmental pollutions are defining challenges for the 21st century. Studies show that the reduction of the energy demand for heating and cooling as the most energy consumers in building sector, is the key factor in the low energy houses. This paper focuses on the courtyard housing typologies, which were traditionally known for their distinctive passive cooling performance and can contribute meaningfully towards achieving a sustainable building design with high energy efficiency in all regions particularly in hot-arid climates. The goal is to propose an optimized low-energy design model for courtyards regarding orientation, geometrical properties and the materials, to provide the maximum thermal comfort for residents. After a comprehensive literature review, the Design Builder software package was employed to develop a three dimensional numerical building model to simulate a courtyard house in BW climate of Phoenix in Arizona as a research case. The model was verified using data from previous research including indoor and outdoor temperature and residents’ thermal comfort and close agreement was achieved. The effects of three main design variables were studied including orientation, geometrical properties (dimensions and proportions) and materials, on residents’ thermal comfort in the courtyard to achieve most efficient design. Interactive correlations between the design variables were quantified and an optimization was conducted using Rhinoceros plug-in Grasshopper in order to maximize thermal comfort for residents and minimize energy consumption related to building heating and cooling. A nonlinear equation were derived based on the optimization investigation to be used in designing courtyard houses in hot-arid climate which can aid designers to design most-efficient low-energy courtyard houses in this region.

Abstract:
With increasing population, economic development and a growing consumerism, South Asian cities are facing a significant change in waste generation and its characteristics. Managing waste has always been the responsibility of local authorities (LAs), but the age-old practice of dumping waste is no longer sustainable. It is an inefficient way to use limited land resources causes environmental pollution of soil and ground-water, social impacts through health issues of nearby communities and is an overall unsustainable practice leading to loss of valuable material resources. Obviously, LAs need to look for sustainable options of reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Integrating the existing system of informal waste-pickers in South Asia, who dominate recycling even before the waste enters the formal management system can lead to significant environmental (material recovery), social (health) and economic (livelihood options) benefits. ICLEI South Asia conducted a project in 7 South Asian LAs encouraging them to promote waste segregation and recycling particularly through informal sector, to move towards a zero-waste community. Successful pilot projects in the cities, demonstrated how recycling helped to reduce waste going to landfills, produced resource materials including compost and generated livelihood for waste-pickers in the city. Continuous engagement with local communities and waste pickers ensured the continuity of the pilots even beyond the life of the project. Critical to successful recycling is simultaneous segregation of waste at source which relies heavily on the awareness levels of community as well as well-established linkages with recycling units which will take up the segregated recyclables. Moving towards zero waste in cities needs collaboration with state and national government agencies so as to incorporate all types of waste, since LAs are only responsible for municipal waste which technically excludes medical waste and hazardous waste but which are major components of the waste coming out of cities.

Statement of the Problem: Paddy husk (PH) is an agricultural waste which has not been utilized properly worldwide. Mostly it is left unused as waste or simply burned in the field creating significant environmental problems. It is expected to have about 700,000 tons of paddy husk production in Sri Lanka in year 2020. PH is an organic nutrient source particularly rich in silicon. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of incorporation of PH in the growing substrate to improve plant growth, yield and disease tolerance. A simplified hydroponics system (SHS) with PH and sand (3:2 v:v) media was tested on capsicum plants. In addition, the effect of amendment of soil media with different ratios of PH was investigated on Capsicum annuum L. The effect of amendment of potting media of rubber nursery plants with 20% of PH charcoal or PH ash was also studied. Findings: More than 50% of soluble Si was detected in the nutrient solution of SHS as measured by colorimetric method. SHS was effective for increasing fruit length, fruit weight, shoot length, root length with 83% of reduction of anthracnose disease. In the pot experiment, it was revealed that incorporation of 60% of PH in to soil would be effective for reducing anthracnose disease of capsicum. Significant improvement of plant diameter was reported in rubber nursery plants when potting media was amended with either PH charcoal or PH ash. Conclusion & Significance: In case of anthracnose disease of capsicum use of PH would be an environmental friendly control measure. The findings open path for future investigations on the effect of different forms of PH for enhancing performance of different plants. Further investigations should be conducted to find the vital nutritional potentials of PH and prevent it disposing as waste

Abstract:
Climate change is affecting birds worldwide. Such impacts have always been prevailing due to rising temperature or unpredictable rainfall that might be too abundant or little and which in turn bring about dire consequences upon the lives of the endemic bird known as Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi). In this paper we propose a framework analysis describing the possible patterns of change in the distribution of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) population based on climate parameters such as temperature, rainfall and humidity in hope to better have an improved quantitative methodology meant to identify and describe these patterns. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method recoursing to focus upon sites observation and a deep interviews to be carried out while using SPSS 16 in order to know the variables correlation in hope to determine the plausible significance between them that allow us to analyse the effects of environmental variables on bird species in this study. We tested the proposed methodology using data from the West Bali National Park and the existing data of climate variables over the last decade where climate variables are considered to be significant factors influencing the lives of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi). This study discovers that increases in temperature and precipitation each year have adversely affected the number of Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) population indicating that the bird’s survival capacity depends largely much on temperature. Besides, it has been perceived that Bali Myna is very reproductive in rainy season but its fluctuations whether high or low impacts them as well. The distribution mapping show a decline of population in 2006 while an increase was perceived during the last five year period of 2011-2015. Besides, over the same period, a slight increase of 0.4 °C in mean temperature was noticed precisely in Cekik our research site where Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) are.

Abstract:
From the environmental point of view there is a great interest in a recycling of packaging foils. Most of them are based on glycol modified poly (terepthalate ethylene)-PETG- printed with colorful inks. Therefore, there is necessary to rinse out inks from the foils first to make them processable. In the first step, the waste foils coming from different producers were characterized in terms of their structure and composition. It was found that they are similar to each other and that is possible to wash away all of the colorful inks in one shot with the appropriately selected medium. The comparison of properties of the foils before and after washing showed that there is no effect of the solvent used. In the next step the transparent foils after washing were dried and processed directly by the twin screw extruder machine in laboratory scale. Based on the results from thermal analysis (TGA, DSC) and rheological behavior (MFI index, shear modulus, complex viscosity) the processing conditions have been optimized. Finally, the effect of different processing temperature and number of cycles on properties of regrind material was investigated. The aim of the study was to analyze the possibility to use regrind PETG foil as a raw material. It would be add to pure PETG to decrease the costs of production or to mix with e.g., nanoparticles to provide new properties

Abstract:
A new type of material PAdeCS®, derived from concrete sludge has been developed and its removal performances for heavy metals and toxic anions such as arsenate, boron were examined. Concrete sludge is waste of fresh concrete, which is rich in calcium and strong alkaline. Concrete sludge is generated when unused concrete is returned from construction sites or excess concrete in the concrete-using industries. In Japan, the annual emission rate of concrete sludge is as large as several millions metric tons and it requires an acid treatment to neutralize the alkaline components before disposal. We have developed a method for manipulating concrete sludge to prepare a solid material through partial removal of calcium contents to avoid hardening of concrete. After solid-liquid separation, the solid residue was obtained, which is still rich in calcium and alkaline. PAdeCS®, so prepared have versatile usage including heavy metal removal and toxic anion removal from waste water.
In addition, calcium and alkaline in PAdeCS® would form hydroxyapatite (HAP) when mixed with dissolved phosphorus ions. Thus, PAdeCS® can be used for phosphorous recovery process from sewage stream. We first tested the removal performance of boron and fluorine in water. Since PAdeCS® is derived from hydrated cement, it would contain a certain amount of ettringite, a crystalline material with the chemical formula, Ca6Al2 (SO4)3(OH)12•26H2O of which sulfate ions have anion exchange capacity with ambient anions. The experimental results showed that boron as well as fluorine in water can be removed efficiently. In addition, removal of heavy metals and arsenate in water was examined and showed excellent removal performances. Thus PAdeCS® is a versatile solid material for environmental-related applications.

Abstract:
We measured the emissions of VOCs from polymeric materials such as PVC, PP and PE under various environmental conditions. We prepared a passive type flux sampler made of a glass petri dish of which the inner diameter is 22 mm and the height is 5 mm. A fixed amount of Tenax GR powder is placed on the inner bottom of the sampler as an adsorbent for capturing VOCs. A sheet of a target polymeric material was placed on the sampler for a given period under constant temperature condition. The VOCs emitted from the polymeric sheet diffused through the sampler space and were captured onto the adsorbent. The captured VOCs were then analyzed by the ATD-GC/MS technique to determine the composition and the emission rates. The temperature was change in the range of 25°C (room temperature) to 75°C and the sampling period was set 24 hrs. To examined the time-course of the VOC emission behaviors, the test polymeric materials were left under the same conditions up to 4 weeks and the emission measurements were carried out every 1 week. The total VOC emission (TVOC emission, reduced to toluene) of soft PVCs were much higher than those from other polymers such as PE, PET and we focused on the emission from soft PVCs with different properties. The major VOCs emitted from soft PVC were phenol, 2-ethylhexanol, DEHP and aliphatic hydrocarbons. DEHP is intentionally added to PVC as a plasticizer and 2-ethylhexanol was supposed to be a product of dissociation of DEHP. The emission rate of each component showed a time change as well as temperature dependency. The emission of phenol decreased with time and that of DEHP decreased at first 3 weeks but increased after 4 weeks. The temperature dependence of the emission rates can be expressed by the Arrhenius type equation and the apparent activation energy was determined. These results could be useful for the evaluation of life-cycle risks caused by the use, recycle and reuse of polymeric materials used in commercial products.

Abstract:
Combustion of coal and municipal solid waste (MSW) causes air pollution and produces solid residues which contain high levels of toxic elements. The toxic characteristics of residues generated from combustion of MSW in waste-to-energy plants are strictly controlled by Federal and State Waste Management Regulations. According to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), residue generated from combustion of MSW is considered hazardous and must be tested according to EPA Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) Method 1311 and suitably treated for its safe disposal to landfills. Experiments with various treatment chemicals as primary independent variable had earlier been conducted by several agencies and facilities. The author has successfully developed two new cost-effective solutions for stabilizing heavy metals in MSW residues to cover the gap between the leachability concentrations of toxic elements observed in residues and the leachability toxicity limits as per EPA's regulatory threshold. These methods include treating MSW residue fly ash (FA) with 2% dolomitic lime by weight or by injecting aqueous (39% concentration) sodium sulfide at a controlled rate. The extensive full scale experimental study was carried out at 240 t/day capacity Hampton/NASA waste-to-energy mass burn MSW incinerator (MSWI). This process has showed savings to the extent of $150,000 per year by treating the plant's combustion residues with aqueous sodium sulfide over the use of dolomitic lime for ash treatment. The treatment method invented has also shown better control of the leachability of toxic heavy metals than previously used chemical treatment methods. Comparative study showing the level of leachability of toxic heavy metals with different treatment methods has also been studied and the best management practices for use and disposal of such wastes have been discussed.

The results showed that the pH of most of the water samples were slightly alkaline with the exception of Oke-Ijemo stream which was slightly acidic but the values obtained fell within the WHOstandards. Sulphate and phosphates were not detected at all in the rivers Sokori and Gbangba as well as Oke-Ijemo stream but were detected in Kobiti stream which fell below the permissible limits. Iron and zinc were present in all the locations investigated with three out of the four locations having iron concentration above the permissible level and zinc concentrations were below the WHO standards. In conclusion, there was no pollution of the water bodies therein with the exception of iron and hence water sources investigated could be generally considered fit for industrial, domestic and aqua-cultural purposes
but for human consumption adequate treatment with appropriate chemicals should be carried out before to prevent outbreak of water borne diseases among the living populace in these areas. However, people residing in these communities should be advised on indiscriminate dumping of any refuse and domestic wastes into the water bodies so as to prevent environmental

A wide range of environmental factors including heavy metals stress stimulates oxidative stress. So, antioxidant resistance mechanisms may provide a strategy to enhance metal tolerance by minimizing the toxic effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the present investigation, the effects of heavy metals producing antioxidative defense systems i.e. Superoxide dismutase, Peroxidase and Catalase were studied in the potato plants grown in soil polluted with heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Pb). The results showed that the tannery effluent was highly toxic with high values of all pollution parameters (pH, TDS, NaCl %, ECe, bicarbonates, chlorides). Amount of heavy metals was also high in the effluent and increased with increasing the concentration of effluent. Amount of chromium was the maximum as compared to other heavy metals. Four concentrations of tannery effluent (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) were prepared with normal garden soil along with the two treatments of ascorbic acid i.e., 0 and 0.5mM. The maximum biomass was observed in the control and it was decreased with the increasing effluent concentration. The exposure of plants to the highest concentration (8%) reduces the height of shoot. Among the treatments, 0.5mM was observed to show the best tolerance and growth properties with respect to metals. The antioxidant enzyme activities wereincreased by metals stress. The present investigation revealed that the ascorbic acid treatment by foliar spray on the growing plants of potato could enhance the efficiency of antioxidants that significantly reduce the toxic effect of metals from tannery effluent amended soil. The antioxidative activity seems to be of primary importance for adaptive response of potato plants against ROS produced under environmental stress.

This is an attempt to address optimal utilization of enormous material waste in machining. On the other hand it tackles to obviate the huge cost of raw metal powder used in laser metal deposition. The findings of the work with recycled material are quite encouraging and are comparable with the conventional raw metal powder.

Metals are used extensively in production and have wide applications. Extraction and processing of mineral resources consume a huge amount of energy and steel being the most widely used metal is responsible for the single largest share of the energy consumption all over the world. In manufacturing, machining is a metal subtractive process and produces a large quantity of chips/swarf. Efficient recycling of machining waste can save a lot of energy as well as its effective disposal. This necessitates developing an efficient way to take the chips and recombine them into a block or useful shape for further applications. The processing method should not involve remelting in furnace as this has low efficiency and creates problems related to ambient pollution. Laser direct metal deposition (LDMD) is an additive manufacturing technique which uses material efficiently. In LDMD, injected metal powder is laser melted and fused to the substrate and subsequent layers. Quick solidification is achieved by the local heating and by traversing the substrate. However, the high cost of raw metal powder is one of the barriers to use of this technique on a wide scale. A possible solution to the problems of machining waste recycling and high cost of LDMD powder is to consider machining swarf as an alternative build material for LDMD. This paper illustrates the viability of laser metal deposition of carbon steel machining swarf with nonstandard particle size and shape. Particles of unprecedented size and shape have been deposited and the feasibility of using this kind of build material has been established following analysis of different outcome parameters including clad geometry, microstructure and other physical properties. The results suggest that this recycling technique could with further development reduce demand for raw material and the energy required to extract and refine it.

Abstract:
The project "Demonstration of an energy-efficient and socially fair neighborhood development based on electrical-thermal interconnection systems" is a project initiated by the city of Zwickau in cooperation with scientific and economic partners. The main goal is to develop technologies and methods for the local energy transition, especially the local heat transition and to demonstrate this as a real laboratory in a suitable district in Zwickau. The conception and implementation of electrical-thermal interconnection systems is the basis for an energetic development in a district for the realization of a zero-emission-city. This requires highly efficient storage technologies and the combination of electrical and thermal overall concepts. This makes it possible to increase the share of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and in particular solar and geothermal energy in residential districts. Due to the demographic structure found in Zwickau, the city is already closer to the future - whether it is the population structure or the comparatively high technical start level due to the numerous projects carried out in this environment. Within the framework of this project, municipal projects such as climate protection concepts as well as scientific projects of the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and their partners can contribute to an energy-efficient and social development. Social welfare plays a special role in priority regions such as Zwickau. In this inter- and transdisciplinary project, it is indispensable to pursue a user-oriented and centered technology development. Title: Developments of risk assessment and impact assessment for marine organisms on offshore wind farm project

The offshore wind farm project in South Korea progressed and is targeted to reach more than 2,000 MW for developing a large-scale complex. The project could have influences such as physical, chemical, geological and biological effect on marine environment. The various impact factors such as noise, vibration and electromagnetic-fields are known to be major influencing factors on fisheries resources and marine organisms. Since the relationship between influential factors – the environmental impacts has not been clarified, difficulties in the acceptability of residents and the process of assessing the sea area utilization. There are no methods for biological impacts and risk assessment to noise, vibration and electromagnetic fields on the offshore wind farm project. While the developed countries assess various impacts on individual organisms, there is limit to interpreting results and determining risks. This study aims to propose bioassay methods and risk assessment methods suitable for Korean offshore wind farm projects. We will develop bioassay methods for field organism in the project area and prepare a risk assessment system to improve the acceptance of residents. Through the developed bioassay methods and risk assessment methods, we expect that this project will be carried out scientifically and systematically and become a project that residents empathize with.

Title: Using cryogenic separation of anode off gases for high temperature fuel cell applications

Rafał Bernat is a PhD candidate of Warsaw University of Technology. He has his expertise in contamination of fuel cells with solid particles, carbon dioxide capture from conventional power plants, fuel cell testing, energy systems modeling and economic analyses of energy systems. He has developed with his group a novel model for mathematical description of fuel cells in large system models. Part of his research methodology is on molten carbonate fuel cell contamination was adopted by the Institute of Power Engineering and similar research is ongoing on other types of fuel cells. He also works as a Sales Engineer for a company selling emergency power systems and acts as an expert consulting another company on their business development. His goal is to consolidate many aspects including research, engineering, economics and sales to obtain broader view on the whole energy business.
Abstract:
Environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of fossil fuel deposits have driven significant research and development into alternative, clean energy sources. Fuel cells present very promising technologies mainly due to the fact that their electricity generation is not based on a heat engine which requires a working agent. Additional benefits could be obtained through combining fuel cells with gas turbines which could theoretically achieve very high efficiency over 70% though not proven to date. Thus, improving the performance of a hybrid solid oxide fuel cell gas turbine system is still under investigation. This can have done by estimating the geometric parameters of the turbomachinery components which shows a clear efficiency advantage for the whole operating range. This review work presents a comprehensive survey of the literature on cryogenic separation of anode off gas for fuel cells. First, the current status of anode off gas separation is assessed. Second, possible techniques are discussed in detail. These include the thermodynamics and heat transfer aspects of the solution. Thermodynamic relations are given for pure hydrogen as the fuel and then gas mixture as the fuel. CO2 capture by chemical or physical sorption and membrane separation have been the dominant fields of research within post- and pre-combustion CO2 capture from power cycles and industrial processes. For a selected range of conditions, potential applications for anode off gas cryogenic separation have been evaluated with respect to energy consumption and profits obtained. For all applications of anode off gas cryogenic separation, specific power consumption and obtainable fuel savings are sensitive to flue-gas or synthesis-gas. However, for certain applications anode off gas cryogenic separation shows promising potential and highly competitive energy figures compared to baseline technology giving an increase in efficiency of 29.58% relative to base values.

Abstract:
Statement of the Problem: Due to the limitation in natural energy resources and the growing concern for environmental protection, alternative power generation technologies have become very important. The perovskite structures have been research subjects for photoluminescence, electroluminescence and catalyst applications. The objective of this study has been to develop less toxic, water-based processes for high efficiency perovskite solar cells. It is therefore essential to design and match the energy levels and interfacial characteristics between the perovskite sensitizers and the contact metal layers. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Fluorine-tin oxide-coated glass substrate was cleaned, then surface-treated with plasma and UV light irradiation to increase its hydrophilicity. The electron-transport layer composed of titanium dioxide dense layer and then a mesoporous layer was spin-coated and further annealed. A precursor solution of lead nitrate was used to plate lead dioxide film which was immersed in MAI to create the MAPbI3 perovskite nanostructured thin film. Spiro- OMeTAD was used as the hole-transport layer and silver was applied as the cathode.
Conclusion & Significance: Since developing less toxic, water-based precursor formulation it has been encouraging to find better deposition method for lead precursor, thus the perovskite nanostructure. After the parameters have been optimized, long time stability characterization could be carried out for the new high efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:
Licorice derived from the roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (Fabaceae) is one of the most widely-used traditional herbal medicines in China. It has been reported to possess significant analgesic activity for treating spastic pain. The aim of this study is to investigate the spasmolytic molecular mechanism of licorice on oxytocin-induced uterine contractions and predict the relevant bioactive constituents in the aqueous extract. The aqueous extraction from licorice inhibited the amplitude and frequency of uterine contraction in a concentration-dependent manner. A morphological examination showed that myometrial smooth muscle cells of oxytocin-stimulated group were oval-shaped and arranged irregularly, while those with a single centrally located nucleus of control and licorice-treated groups were fusiform and arranged orderly. The percentage of phosphorylation of HSP27 at Ser-15 residue increased up to 50.33% at 60 min after oxytocin stimulation. Furthermore, this increase was significantly suppressed by licorice treatment at the concentration of 0.2 and 0.4 mg/mL. Co-localization between HSP27 and α-SMA was observed in the myometrial tissues, especially along the actin bundles in the oxytocin-stimulated group. On the contrary, the co-localization was no longer shown after treatment with licorice. Additionally, employing ChemGPS-NP provided support for a preliminary assignment of liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin as protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors in addition to liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, liquiritin and isoliquiritin as MAPK-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2) inhibitors. These assigned compounds were docked with corresponding crystal structures of respective proteins with negative and low binding energy which indicated a high affinity and tight binding capacity for the active site of the kinases. These results suggest that licorice exerts its spasmolytic effect through inhibiting the phosphorylation of HSP27 to alter the interaction between HSP27 and actin. Furthermore, our results provide support for the prediction that potential bioactive constituents from aqueous licorice extract inhibit the relevant up-stream kinases that phosphorylate HSP27

Abstract:
In Costa Rica there is a great variety of agricultural residues that are presenting an environmental problem. Due to this, two of the main residues have been studied: coffee pulp and pineapple stubble for energy purposes. For this purpose, pellets were obtained from them and from a mixture made up in a 50:50 mass ratio of each residue. The study was performed under different values of moisture and particle size for each pellet processing. Unit density and apparent density were determined with values between 1.09 kg/dm3 to 1.32 kg/dm3, 555.30 kg/m3 to 578.23 kg/m3 respectively. In the case of friability and durability results were found with values ranging from 0.89 to 0.99 and 92.29% to 98.33% respectively values that meet the requirements of the standard. It was determined that the physical properties improved for higher moisture values and lower particle size. In addition, the material used was characterized by finding high contents of sulfur, chlorine and nitrogen in the pineapple stubble that are above that recommended in the standard. The coffee pulp fulfilled all the established in the standard and presented values of lignin superior to the pineapple stubble benefiting the process of pelletizing.

Abstract:
Gyeongbuk provincial government, Korea needs to establish a regional energy plan in 2015 for the next 5 years from 2015 until 2019. It accords to the national basic energy law that every regional provincial government in Korea should implement its regional energy plan every 5-year for the promotion of local economy and sustainable development. Gyeongbuk provincial government has to re-establish a 5-year regional energy plan for the promotion of a specialized regional mid-term energy plan in Gyeongbuk province for coping with the rapid change of energy environment and climate change. In this research, we make a short-list of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by the survey of experts and consideration of its regional environment. We make a prioritization of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by using multi-criteria decision making approach. 2-tier hierarchy is built and it is composed of criteria accounting for local characteristics, market and government policy. Local characteristics consist of local energy demand, timeliness of starting new energy project and possibility of role model in other regional energy plans. In case of market, it accounts for possibility of new regional energy industry creation and job creation possibility. Government policy is composed of national policy adherence, strengthening the capacity of local industry for the climate change and easy to acquire local energy technology. We execute the survey of experts before we prioritize the short-listed energy projects. The analytic hierarchy process which uses 9-points scale is employed for assessing and prioritizing the short-listed of 7 specialized strategic energy projects by making pairwise comparisons of criteria, alternatives and consistency ratio check. The results of this research will provide regional decision makers and regional government officers with the critical decision making data when they focus on the execution of proper regional energy projects considering regional energy environment and limited regional resources including R&D and dissemination of energy related funds.

Global energy environment has been changing due to major issues including climate change, sustainable development and green growth. The advanced economies the U.S, Japan and Germany implemented a strategic R&D and dissemination of new and renewables for leading future energy markets since the early 2000. Specifically, Korean government fast follower, has focused on enhancing a strategic energy technology development with limited R&D budget even though the ratio of R&D budget over GDP is the highest status comparing with other countries. In case of Korea, the strategic energy technology development is equivalent to substitute the effect of natural resource reduction because 97% of the consumed energy in Korea is imported from overseas. Korean economic status is easily affected by the fluctuation of oil price changes due to her poor natural resource status. Now it has been increasing the interest of developing and disseminating new and renewables for sustainable development and low carbon green growth of social system. In this research, we focus on analyzing the relative competiveness of patent status in case of 3 major new and renewables accounting for PV, FC and wind power. This research narrowed down short-list of government sponsored research institutes (GSRI) and major research oriented universities. Patent indicator is one of key factors as decision makers and policy makers for implementing a strategic energy technology development plan and portfolio management for leading the current and future energy technology market during short-/mid-/long-term period. GSRI and major universities have tried to produce R&D outcomes instead of quantitative outputs supported by government and private R&D funds. Decision makers and policy makers of GSRI have been enhancing R&D productivity toward reaching world-class research institutes from qualitative and quantitative aspects. This research carried out for analyzing the relative quantitative competitive analysis of GSRI and major universities in Korea related to 3 major new and renewables for recent 5 years from 2008 to 2013. This research carried out the quantity of registered domestic and international patents related to 3 major new and renewable energy technologies. The research results will provide the fundamental decision making data for energy policy makers when the future R&D strategy in energy technology R&D sector is needed to implement considering the relative status of GSRI.

Title: Impact of foliar application of ascorbic acid on corn (Zea mays L.) under saline conditions

Zahoor Ahmad Sajid has research experience in the field of Plant Tissue Culture/Plant Stress Physiology/Biochemistry. His overall research focus is on to study the mechanism of salinity tolerance in agricultural crop and true halophytes (Thellungiella halophila,). Currently, he is evaluating the potential of different biomolecules (salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, proline, KH2PO4 etc.) against various stresses in different agronomically important crops (potato, pea, maize, etc.). Exogenous application of these biomolecules (pretreatment to plants/callus cultures before inoculation/added in medium) or foliar spray to pot-grown plants has shown to have reduced its effect substantially in plants. These biomolecules minimized the oxidative damage by increasing the amount of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) that in turn reflected in better growth parameters of plants.
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological and biochemical attributes of maize (Zea mays) grown under saline conditions and by exogenous application of ascorbic acid. The experiment was carried out in petri-dishes and pots with randomize complete block design having five replicates for each salt and AA treatment. The certified seeds were sown in petri-dishes with saline water (120 mM) and different concentrations of AA (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mM). The maize seeds were planted in pots and irrigated with tap water. After that the seedlings were irrigated with saline water of 120 mM while respective concentration of AA was applied foliarly until the plants were harvested after sixty days of salt and AA treatment. Various growth and biochemical parameters were found to be severely affected by saline. These were found to be improved gradually with the increasing concentrations of AA. It is evident from the results of present study that presoaking of seeds with salt (120 mM) reduced the germination percentage significantly up to 60.32% while it was 97.8% under control conditions. The % germination was found to be enhanced from 60.32 (at 120 mM NaCl) to 74.68 at 0.1mM, 81.49 at 0.5mM and 86.76% at 1.0 mM concentrations of AA. AA pretreatment confer salt resistance and is likely to prepare the plants for forthcoming oxidative stress by increasing POD and SOD activity and proline contents at the expense of protein degradation

Abstract:
Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag industrial waste from steel-making is generated by 7-9 million tons each year in Korea. BOF slag is reused as construction materials (e.g., land banking and road base). When BOF slags have contact with water however, BOF slag generates highly alkaline leachate (pH>12) by dissolved CaO located on the slags surface. This highly alkaline leachate adversely affects the surrounding environment thus, BOF slag should be appropriately treated prior to reuse. This study aims to mitigate alkaline leachate generation from BOS slag focusing on prevention of CaO dissolution through carbonation. A carbonation test was conducted where BOF slag and NaHCO3 solutions (0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 M) were agitated with the ratio of 1:5 (g-slag: mL-solution) for 48 hr. The pH and Ca2+ concentration was measured for the leachate. Residual free CaO was measured and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted for the treated BOF slags. No significant difference of free CaO concentration was detected after carbonation indicating that NaHCO3 treatment did not significantly affect reduce free CaO concentrations in BOF slags. However, the leachate pH of BOF slags slightly reduced from 12.0 to 11.3 at 1 M NaHCO3 concentration. TGA and XPS analysis also confirmed that CaCO3 was precipitated on the BOF slag surface after carbonation, preventing additional free CaO dissolution. The results suggested that produced CaCO3 was precipitated on BOF slag forming a coating layer on the surface of BOF slag. The further decrease in leachate pH of BOF slag treated with CO2 gas was obtained (from 12.0 to 10.3). CO2 gas treating solution (pH 7.2) which led to leaching out more Ca2+ than NaHCO3 did subsequently producing more CaCO3 coating on the BOF slags. This finding is expected to contribute to developing appropriate treatments for safe and proper BOF slag reuse.

Abstract:
The MICROALBAC project aims to integrate the cultivation of microalgae in conventional wastewater treatment plants to reduce the energy costs of the systems of oxygenation and agitation of the aerobic reactors as well as the revaluation of the "algal biomass" micro-algae/bacteria through its use as a fertilizer and production of biogas as co-substrate. The effect of the "algal biomass" on plant yield (ryegrass and barley) and soil properties has been evaluated at microcosmos level in comparison with conventional sewage sludge. Five different doses of each organic material have been assayed in quadruplicate. Plants have been grown for two months in a growth chamber and then the aerial part of the plant has been cut and fresh and dry weight as well as nutrients and heavy metal plant content have been determined. Different physical (water holding capacity) chemical (pH, EC, nutrients, heavy metals...) and microbiological parameters (basal respiration dehydrogenase and hydrolase activities) were determined in soils. The effect of this "algal biomass" on lettuce growth has also been evaluated in greenhouse conditions in comparison with the addition of anaerobic sludge and conventional inorganic fertilization

Abstract:
The STO3RE project Objective was to demonstrate a new concept of Waste Water Treatment Plants, promoting highadded value uses for sewage sludge and agroindustrial co-substrates, through an innovative Join Management technique, protecting waters against pollution (caused by nitrates), avoiding eutrophication episodes due to diffuse sources and producing energy to be self-sustained. In this work the applicability as soil organic amendment of the digested sludge obtained from the application of this innovative and cost effective technology (anaerobic digestion two phase temperature coupled to ozone oxidation) was evaluated. Two different plant types were selected for testing: i) young and 10 years old almond trees (GF677 almond rootstock, a peach x almond hybrid with good behavior in dry conditions) and ii) Cynara cardunculus, which can be grown in hot, dry Mediterranean climates and it is of use in ecosystem restoration and biomass. Treatments were applied in triplicate to 100 m2 plots at rates of 170 kg N/ha/year (dose 1) and 100 kg N/ha/year (dose 2). Non-amended plots and plots amended with conventional sewage sludge were used as controls. Abstract:
A significant amount of chemicals are released from various chemical accidents including leaking, explosion, handlings and transports. The released chemical substances or wastes obtained from primary treatments can include hazardous or toxic chemicals which bring difficulty in finding proper disposal. It is because there are no specific guidelines to deal with them. Thus most of the chemicals or wastes obtained from chemical accident treatments have been disposed of as hazardous or designated wastes which require a lot of costs. This study presents a proposed classification procedure or method for chemicals or chemical wastes produced from primary treatments after chemical accidents or releases. This study tries to propose a quantified method to classify chemical wastes by assigning some scores based on NFPA rating, pH rating and waste generation amount. This study rated chemical substances according to the US-based National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) rating systems which arebased on the degree of health risk (blue diamond), Flammability (red diamond), reactivity (yellow diamond), on a scale of 0 to 4 and unusual water reactivity (W) or oxidative capability (oxy) of chemical substances. The pH rating systems of interest acidic or basic chemical substances or wastes were referred by Korean regulations of the designated waste classification and their H+or OH- strength. The chemical substance or waste quantities to be disposed of or treated per day were also considered for the classification by referring Korean regulations of the small amount standard for hazardous chemical substances which should be reported to local or governmental environmental agency. Then chemical substances or wastes are classified as designated or general wastes relying on the integrated scores or score points obtained based on the proposed classification method or procedure.

The rapid industrial development is facing problems due to the energy depletion in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative energy sources. Alternative energies like bio-fuels can be produced using waste fuels, so it is ecofriendly. Since the organic waste has been banned to dump in landfill and ocean, one of the most practical methods currently used to reduce organic waste is composting or feed stuffing. Converting organic wastes into useful energy sources may contribute to protecting environment as well as developing alternative energy sources. In this study, bio-char was made from food waste to solve the problems of energy shortage. Bio-char is one of the solid sources in energy production by using organic waste. In this study, it was produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). HTC is a new technology for treating wet biomass waste with a thermal conversion process at relatively low temperature (180-2500C). So, it seems to be a suitable treatment method for Korean food wastes because Korean food waste has a large amount of moisture content and sodium concentration. In this study, biochar is produced by 10 kg of food waste. The reaction degrees are 180, 200, 2200C and the reaction time is for 4, 6, 8 hours, respectively.

Abstract:
In this work geothermal energy resources map of the Niger Delta Basin was constructed using borehole thermal log data from about 600 deep wells covering. The Niger Delta areas of interest including offshore for the purpose of locating geothermal reservoirs and estimate their potentials in the basin. Three major thermal reservoir anomalies fields were delineated and quantitatively interpreted as presented in form of maps showing the reservoirs potential areas in both onshore and offshore parts of the Niger Delta. The constructed Niger Delta Maps of geothermal energy resources stored in the sedimentary rock mass for the accessible depth interval 0-4000 m shows two major onshore anomalies, one in the north (with maximum energy values, 800 GJ/m2), another in the east to northeastern part (maximum energy values, 1250 – 1500 GJ/m2). Another two major anomalies are found located offshore, one in the south with values, 750-1000 GJ/m2 occurring at about 100 km seawards and the other, in the southwest offshore with values 750-1250 GJ/m2, still at about 100 km from the shore. A second map of the Niger Delta showing geothermal energy resources stored in the sedimentary rock mass to depth from surface to basement is constructed. In this map, the sedimentary rock thickness is taken to depth of 6.5km. The map shows a small anomaly in the northern part with maximum value 1500 GJ/m2 and a major anomaly occurring in the eastern part of the basin with values 2000-3500 GJ/m2 onshore. Offshore in the south and southwest anomalies in the total sedimentary rock mass occur with highest values, up to 4000GJ/m2 with the southwestern anomaly extending west to the shore. It is much of interest to note the seaward – westward extension of these anomalies both in size, configuration and magnitude for the geothermal energy in the total sedimentary thickness to the underlying basement. These anomalies fields show the most favourable locations and areas of geothermal energy resources for further work.

Simple sugars play vital role in biological functions in living cells. The three commonly known monosaccharides glucose, galactose and fructose used as energy source by organisms. Glucose, exclusively brain fuel has to be regulated in human body to prevent our brain from any potential fuel shortage. Significant drop in blood sugar level can cause lack of concentration, dizziness and headache. Due to this reason it is very critical to develop a chemical sensor that is cheap, simple to use, rapid and efficient to measure and monitor blood glucose level. Supramolecular cyclodextrin polymeric gel is synthesized for the separation of monosacchrides in aqueous solution. A nanometric hollow molecule i.e. cyclodextrin is polymerized by using polymerizing agent and form inclusion complexation with naphthalene probe. Boronic acid is used as sugar recognition terminal, naphthalene as reporter site and alkyl chain as a tail to maximize inclusion complexation. The adsorption phenomenon was investigated by using HPLC, UV-VIS spectrometer and Fluorescence spectrometer. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was analyzed by using Langmuir modeling. Boronic Naphthalene (B-Nap-Cn) probe was synthesized for selective binding by reacting with cis-1,2-diol and cis-1,3-diols to form reversible covalent complexes. Probes with alkyl chain length of C-4, C-8 and C-12 were synthesized to analyze chain length effect. Results showed that fructose and glucose showed high amount of adsorption towards B-Nap-C4/β-CyD gels and increase in alkyl chain resulted decrease in amount of adsorption for glucose, fructose and galactose. In B-Nap-C4/γ-CyD gel adsorption analysis all three sugars had showed increase in adsorption amount with increasing concentration. This is probably the larger cavity γ-CD could enable probes to freely adjust their active side to bind the sugar. In Summary, B-Nap-Cn incorporated supramolecular cyclodextrin polymeric gel is promising chemical sensor that can be utilized to examine blood sugar level.
